  • How Human Became Fat? An Anthropological Approach to the Development of Fatnessin Humans

Open Access•N K Devi, Benrithung Murry et al.•ARTICLE•The Oriental Anthropologist A…•2023

Evolutionary success of Homo sapiens is best understood by referring to natural selection on the twofold structure of inheritance, that is, gene and culture and also their interaction over time. Socioeconomic and technological variations have transformed lifestyles over the years. In tandem, deviations in food and physical activity forms have been crucial to the emergence of higher fatness among the world’s populations. The burden of obesity and …

  • Dopaminergic D4 receptor polymorphism among 24 populations of India: An anthropological insight

    Open Access•Kallur N Saraswathy, Yaiphaba Sanjenbam et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2013

Various studies have tried to elucidate the genomics underlying the ethnic diversity of Indian populations. The 48-basepair variable number tandem repeat (VNTR) of the DRD4 gene, besides its clinical importance, has been a subject of interest for understanding human evolutionary history worldwide. In spite of its highly polymorphic nature it has not been much explored by anthropologists, especially in the Indian context. In the present study, an …

  • Haptoglobin polymorphism among fourteen populations of India

Huidrom Suraj Singh, Deepti Saksena et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2012

Haptoglobin (HP) is a serum protein that has the capability of binding the extracorpuscular haemoglobin released during haemolysis. It plays an important role in protection of haemolytic disease by reducing the oxidative and peroxidative potential at free haemoglobin. The present study was aimed to determine the prevalence of HP polymorphism among different Indian populations, anthropologically belonging to diverse ethnicity. The polymorphism was…

  • Common genetic heritage and admixture among Indian population groups as revealed by mtDNA markers

Open Access•Yaiphaba Sanjenbam, Sanjenbam Yaiphaba Meitei et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2012•References: 1

The present study determines the inter-and intra-population affinities or variations among the diverse population groups of India. The major goal of the present study was to understand the peopling of India and its role in the peopling of Southeast Asia using 11 restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) markers. A total of 950 unrelated individuals belonging to 19 population groups having varied ethnic, linguistic,…

  • Brief communication: Allelic and haplotypic structure at the DRD2 locus among five North Indian caste populations

    Open Access•Kallur N Saraswathy, Yaiphaba Sanjenbam et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2010•References: 40

The dopamine D2 receptor (DRD2) gene, with its known human‐specific derived alleles that can facilitate haplotype reconstruction, presents an important locus for anthropological studies. The three sites ( TaqIA , TaqIB , and TaqID ) of the DRD2 gene are widely studied in various world populations. However, no work has been previously published on DRD2 gene polymorphisms among North Indian populations. Thus, the present study attempts to understan…

  • Haemoglobinopathies and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in a malaria endemic region of Manipur, northeast India

Open Access•Nongthombam Achoubi, Mohd Asghar et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•2010

This study deals with the screening of haemoglobinopathies and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency among three population groups of Manipur, namely 302 Pangan (Manipuri Muslim), 300 Bamon (Manipuri Brahmin), and 111 Kabui (tribal) individuals. Blood samples were collected by finger prick method and were screened for abnormal haemoglobins by using the Naked Eye Single Tube Red Cell Osmotic Fragility Test. The male samples of Pangan…
