An erroneous conception that Hindu farmers starve unwanted bovine calves in a state of ignorance, or "unknowingness," is shown to be the result of three interrelated factors: (1) too deductive an application of a general theory; (2) a field methodology which is a consequence of the theory; and (3) a conception of Hinduism not germane to the farmers to whom it is applied
