In traditional Indian villages and their relatively circumscribed extensions - where the caste affiliations of all are known to everyone and where interaction generally accords with that knowledge - villagers rarely come into contact with strangers in situations where caste is apposite. Consequently, anthropologists have almost never concerned themselves with questions of whether and how strangers identify each other in order to ensure appropriate caste behavior in any necessary encounter. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate that, at least in one village area of north India, such caste identification of strangers is deemed essential and that the process of identification can be determined by social anthropological methods of analysis. The findings are then used to help resolve a point of difference with respect to caste systems between F. G. Bailey and Gerald D. Berremanl - basically a question of whether skin color and other obvious physical indicators are necessary to maintain caste systems in the face of spatial dispersion and numerous contacts with strangers
