Differential preservation of entombments from historic wall vaults at Cypress Grove Cemetery #1, New Orleans, LA
Non-Adult Morbidity and Mortality at Tell Abraq, United Arab Emirates (2197–2036 cal. B.C.)
A large number of commingled non-adult human remains were recovered from a Bronze Age tomb (2197–2036 cal. B.C.) at the site of Tell Abraq in the United Arab Emirates. Non-adult age representation was assessed from femora in the tomb, which were subsequently analyzed for periosteal reactions and cortical thickness. Among the 127 non-adults, approximately 32% (n = 40) were aged as preterm or neonate. Evidence of periostosis among 41% of the observ…
Establishing a minimum number of individuals during a salvage recovery of a historic New Orleans cemetery
Positions of Power: Situational Flexibility in Mimbres Society
Social power establishes and legitimizes actions for individuals within a society who accept the structures that create that power. Differences in power can develop without strict hierarchies, however. Here, we explore the power differences among groups living in the Mimbres Mogollon region of southwestern New Mexico using bioarchaeological data and a case study from the Harris site, a Late Pithouse period village occupied circa AD 550-1000. Aspe…
The Land of Opportunity: Bioarchaeological Perspectives of Women’s Lives in the Industrial Expansion into the Western United STATES (1850–1915)
Taking a bioarchaeological approach that puts human skeletal remains in context with historical records, we reconstruct the experiences of three women who lived in the West during the 1800s and early 1900s. Telling the stories of one woman from a homestead outside the city of Las Vegas, Nevada and two women recovered from a sand dune near Walters Ferry, Idaho, we offer insight into what life was like for those who ventured west in search of new i…
Situational Power in Cooperative Communities: Indicators from Bioarchaeology in the Mimbres Region of Southwest New Mexico
Violence and Social Structure in the Mimbres Region of Southwest New Mexico: Interpretations from Bioarchaeological Data
A comprehensive bioarchaeological assessment of health and interpersonal violence was completed using data from a sample of 247 adult burials from Late Pithouse (AD 550–1000) and Pueblo (AD 1000–1350) sites in the Mimbres region of the American Southwest. The results of skeletal analysis demonstrate evidence of social interactions that have not been well described in case studies that have highlighted individual burials and/or singular communitie…
Bioarchaeological perspectives on the social experience of prehistoric and historic communities
Traditionally, reconstructions of social complexity in past societies have relied on a plethora of indicators including, but not limited to, ancient texts, monumental architectural and archaeological evidence for hierarchical leadership, surplus storage, craft specialisation and the density of populations. With the exception of mortuary patterns, particularly the quantity and quality of grave goods, bioarchaeological data have featured less promi…
Linking Health and Marriage Practices Among Commingled Assemblages: A Case Study from Bronze Age Tell Abraq, UAE
Kin Groups and Social Power at the Harris Site, Southwestern New Mexico
The Late Pithouse period in the Mimbres Mogollon region of southwestern New Mexico was a dynamic time during which many social changes occurred. One of the more significant of these changes appears to be related to the role of land-holding kin groups at some of the larger pithouse sites. We present bioarchaeological data from our recent excavations at the Harris Site in the Mimbres River Valley to illustrate that certain kin groups were gaining s…
