  • Living well in extended reality

Open Access•Katleen Gabriels, Richard Volkman•ARTICLE•Journal of Moral Education•2025

Practical wisdom is the intellectual virtue relating to the ability to fix ends and discern in a concrete circumstance how to achieve those ends. It is cultivated through engagement with experience rather than book learning. However, a whole matrix of convergent technologies, such as headsets, haptic suits, AI-driven chatbots, and extended realities, such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), creates new conditions for training practical wisd…

  • AI Moral Enhancement

Open Access•Richard Volkman, Katleen Gabriels•ARTICLE•Science and Engineering Ethics•2023

Several proposals for moral enhancement would use AI to augment (auxiliary enhancement) or even supplant (exhaustive enhancement) human moral reasoning or judgment. Exhaustive enhancement proposals conceive AI as some self-contained oracle whose superiority to our own moral abilities is manifest in its ability to reliably deliver the ‘right’ answers to all our moral problems. We think this is a mistaken way to frame the project, as it presumes th…

  • Exchanging IRL for VR

    Open Access•Richard Volkman•ARTICLE•ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society•2018

Virtual Reality (VR) experiences have arrived for a wide audience, and some worry that VR experience entices us to abandon experience In Real Life (IRL). While such worries cannot be dismissed out of hand, they are liable to be imprecise and distorted without careful analysis of the opportunity costs of VR experience. Generally, we are not liable to abandon real experience for its virtual analogue. Even a perfect VR experience is generally not a …

  • The path dependence of dynamic traditions and the illusion of cultural Aids

    Open Access•Richard Volkman•ARTICLE•ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society•2016

Analyses of cultural change routinely turn on observations or evaluations regarding what some institution, system of belief, or technology is doing to "us," but it can be obscure how one is supposed to fix the meaning of such claims. This essay explores such analyses, calling attention to their reliance on the rhetorical force of the first person plural when the literal meaning of their claims strongly suggests the third person would be more lite…

  • Collective intelligence and ethical individualism

    Open Access•Richard Volkman•ARTICLE•ACM SIGCAS Computers and Society•2013

Many commentators conceive the self in either atomistic or holistic terms, even as our understanding of the self as a node of processing within the wider network for revealing the "wisdom of crowds" has long transcended this dichotomy. Understanding the self as a "center of narrative gravity" leaves room for a robust individualism in the context of rich sociality. Such a conception is already present in the classic individualism of the 19 th Cent…
