Post-Gaddafi Repercussions in Northern Mali
While utopias of (political) autonomy or an independent (Tuareg) state have for long been part and parcel of internal debates among Tuareg, it was only recently that the claim for independence was formulated to the outside world. A Tuareg state, Azawad, was even put into practice, albeit for some months only. A second characteristic is that there has never been a serious attempt at integrating all Tuareg, regardless of the country they are living…

They Have Stolen Our Land: Enclosure, Commodification and Patterns of Human-Environment Relations among Afar Pastoralists in Northeastern Ethiopia
This paper takes enclosure and commodification processes of "nature" one step beyond a political economy perspective conceptualising them from ontological notions of nature-culture relations. Taking the case of enclosure for large-scale commercial agriculture schemes and a game reserve in northeastern Ethiopia, the paper argues that enclosure and nature commodification are part of neoliberal environmental governance that has been built on the not…
Bridging Disciplinary Gaps in Studies of Human-Environment Relations: A Modelling Framework
Modern human-environment relations are problematic and difficult to analyse in terms of nature and culture. Many authors suggest to abandon and overcome the nature-culture dichotomy in order to reorganise the academic division of labour, not only on environmental questions. Anthropologist Philippe Descola, for example, surveyed the empirical evidence of patterns in humanenvironmental relations, suggesting four abstract cosmologies. Here, we propo…

Political Orders in the Making: Emerging Forms of Political Organization from Libya to Northern Mali
The current political developments in Libya and northern Mali represent nothing less than the renegotiation of the postcolonial political order. The toppling of Libya’s authoritarian regime and the country’s subsequent disintegration into post-revolutionary camps, plus the continuing Tuareg rebellion in northern Mali accompanied by the rise of transnational jihadist forces, have fostered the fragmentation of state structures, greater heterogeneit…
Tuareg separatism in Mali
This article provides a contextualized overview of Tuareg separatism and the violence that has attended it in Mali. The article sketches key episodes and developments in the conflict between the Malian state and Tuareg separatist nationalists, and outlines Tuareg political goals and internal dynamics. The article examines the impact on Tuareg separatism of the presence of international Jihadi-Salafist movements in the region and the resulting int…
From Friends to Enemies: Negotiating nationalism, tribal identities, and kinship in the fratricidal war of the Malian Tuareg
The article deals with the notion of friendship in the Tuareg resistance movement. Among Tuareg migrants, friendship terms were mainly used as a political means aiming to strengthen the unity of an imagined, but still utopian Tuareg nation. This changed dramatically in the course of the so called Tuareg rebellion that broke out after thousand of migrants had come back to Mali and Niger from Algerian and Libyan exile in the beginning of the 1990s.…
Emerging forms of power in two African borderlands a theoretical and empirical research outline
The transformation of statehood is a frequently debated topic in studies dealing with globalization. This is particularly true with regard to the African continent; here, the “building” of the nation‐state has been confronted, more than anywhere else, with a number of challenges. At times and in certain areas, state structures even collapsed, and thus transformed contemporary Africa into the symbol of state failure. In particular the peripheries …
Modern Chariots: Speed And Mobility In Contemporary ‘Small’ Wars In The Sahara
This chapter argues that the mastery of time and space is of crucial importance in so-called'small' wars, i.e. conflicts of relatively low intensity. Time and space are inherently social and cultural constructions rather than absolute conceptions and it is in small wars that different conceptions of time and space compete. The metaphor of the chariot is used to inform an analysis of the Tuareg upheavals in Niger and Mali because of the way rebels…
