This article examines the role of friendship and networks of mutual support as strategies of resistance and life-sustaining practices, exploring their affective, political, identity-related and care dimensions. In contrast to perspectives that stress the fragility and immediacy of interpersonal ties in postmodernity (Bauman, 2003), we draw on Foucault’s concept of “friendship as a way of life” (Foucault, 1981) and on the transformative potential …
Decolonising affect: Towards a feminist theory of political friendship
Using a decolonial feminist perspective, this article develops a theory of political friendship grounded in the tensions faced by white and racialised women when building affective networks for feminist action. It argues that hegemonic feminism, by failing to interrogate the colonial nature of the power geometries that shape affective capacities, reproduces exclusionary dynamics within the political friendships it seeks to promote. Drawing on Jud…
Who cares for heritage? A feminist critique centred on care work in heritage regimes
This article advances a feminist critique of heritage by placing care work and social reproduction at the centre of analysis. Drawing on feminist epistemologies, feminist economics, and ethnographic fieldwork, it argues that heritage regimes are materially sustained by informal, feminised and undervalued labour. From physical maintenance and emotional labour to intergenerational transmission and community cohesion, such work remains largely invis…
Teacher Training Via Debate on the Way of St. James as Controversial Heritage
This paper presents the results of an intervention proposal regarding cultural heritage based on active learning methods and carried out during initial teacher training. The social theme taken as a reference was the pilgrim route of the Way of St. James declared to be the first Cultural Route of the Council of Europe in 1987, due to the fact that its controversial dimensions (conservation, use, management, authenticity, stereotypes and performati…
Emotional conflict and trauma: The recovery of stolen memory using a mixed-methods approach
This paper presents the results of a research project carried out in Portomarín, a small town in Galicia (Spain), which was flooded as a result of the construction of a dam in 1963. A new town was built a short distance away, but a strong sense of rootlessness remains among the inhabitants of the town. To what extent does the population of Portomarín recognise its memory regarding the forced removal as heritage? What means can be employed to inco…

Pepa Vargas.
Who owns the name of a place? On place branding and logics in two villages in Galicia, Spain
This article deals with the marketing strategies employed to promote the name of a place in a global context of heritage propertisation. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in two sites on the 'Costa da Morte' in Galicia, northwest of Spain, this article analyses the discourses and practices employed to commoditise place names and the strategies regarding place branding. In particular, two strategies are contemplated: first, the creation of a name …
Heritage and participatory governance: An analysis of political strategies and social fractures in Spain
In the heritage field, institutions tend to see social participation as a synonym for good governance practice. This extends to other areas such as the environment, humanitarian aid, and sustainable development. In this article, the authors analyze the use of participatory models in the management of heritage through the study of three heritage sites in Spain: the prehistoric paintings in Altamira, the Mosque‐Cathedral in Córdoba, and the Cabo de…
