On the Erudition of a (non)Orthodox Author from the first third of the 17th C
Kasijan Sakovyč (сa. 1578–1647) can rightfully be attributed to one of the most educated representatives of both Orthodox and Uniate monasticism in Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth of the first third of the 17th century. Kasijan’s diversity in terms of literary genres reflects his wide knowledge. Thus, his polemical treatises against the Orthodox Church and, partly, against the Uniates, echoed the events of his personal biography: after 1625, Sakov…
‘Verbal Pictures’ in Seventeenth-Century Orthodox Sermons
This paper puts forward some hypotheses on the sources of a ‘verbal picture’, that is to say allegorical love poetry, in a prosta mova marriage sample sermon addressed to laity and found in two Orthodox Ritual (Trebnik) editions: the first is by the publisher Michail Slezka (L’viv 1644) and the second by the bishop Arsenij Želiborskij (L’viv 1645). I shall argue that that the very combination of vernacular homiletic material and traditional eccle…
Kazane na pogrebe (Trebnik, Vilnius 1621) in the Context of the Catholic Funeral Sample Sermons Tradition
The article discusses hypotheses for the possible sources of two funeral sample sermons written in prostaja mova, which were addressed to the laity and attached to the Ritual edition by the Orthodox Brotherhood of Vilnius in 1621. The author suggests that the very combination of homiletic material in vernacular language with the traditional ecclesiastical rites goes back to the Catholics Ritual рublished in 1551 in Mainz and was later followed in…

Androzzi’s Della frequenza della communione (1579) was originally an essay on the preparation for frequent communi…
The Orthodox Sermon in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth of the 17th Century
It has traditionally been assumed that the oral preaching practice of the Orthodox Church in Poland at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries was brought to life by external and mainly Catholic influences. The present article attempts to rethink these influences and offer an explanation not in terms of “mechanical” borrowings and a succumbing of Orthodox theology to Western influences (the concept of “pseudomorphosis” articulated by G. Florovsky…

The history of the ascetic works composed by the Flemish Jesuit Franz Coster (1531–1619) and their translations into Polish and “prosta mova” are considered as an interesting example of the 17th-century literary contacts in Europe and an example of the spread of Catholic works among adherents of Orthodoxy. Coster’s Bulla super forma iuramenti professionis fidei (1576) was originally intended to members of the Catholic Sodality of the Blessed Virg…
