The fortress of the Teutonic Order in South-eastern Europe
Feldioara has long been regarded as the headquarters of the Teutonic Knights during their brief Transylvanian period (1211–1225), but neither history nor archaeology could provide compelling evidence based solely on traditional methods. By radiocarbon dating mortars (sub-micron calcite fraction separation followed by chemical digestion with polyphosphoric acid before AMS target formation), it was finally determined that the earliest defensive con…
Noi cercetări arheologice la cetatea Saschiz I. Incinta exterioară / New Archaeological Research at Saschiz Fortress I. The Outer Ward
Saschiz, once one of the most important Saxon settlements of eastern Transylvania, located 23 km away from Sighisoara, was included decades ago in the UNESCO world heritage list. On a rocky hill north‐west of the village rises its refuge fortress, whose beginnings have been archaeologically ascribed to the early 15 th century based on the research undertaken in 1999–2000, the first investigation of this kind undertaken on site. In 2018, the fortr…

This second study presents even more briefly the main data collected outside the monument, as they appeared in more convoluted and fragmentary contexts. These excava…
