Phylogenetic Systematics of the North American Fossil Caninae (Carnivora
The canid subfamily Caninae includes all the living canids and their most recent fossil relatives. Their sister taxon is the Borophaginae with which they share an important modification of the lower carnassial, namely the presence of a bicuspid talonid, which gives this tooth an additional function in mastication. Contributing to this function is the enlargement of the posterolingual cingulum of M1 and development of a hypocone. The Caninae diver…
Rise and Fall of the Beringian Steppe Bison
The widespread extinctions of large mammals at the end of the Pleistocene epoch have often been attributed to the depredations of humans; here we present genetic evidence that questions this assumption. We used ancient DNA and Bayesian techniques to reconstruct a detailed genetic history of bison throughout the late Pleistocene and Holocene epochs. Our analyses depict a large diverse population living throughout Beringia until around 37,000 years…
Tirari formation and contained faunas, Pliocene of the Lake Eyre basin, South Australia
First recognized at Lake Palankarinna, south-eastern Lake Eyre Basin, South Aus¬ tralia, the Tirari Formation has subsequently been traced northward to outcrops along the lower Warburton River.Unfossiliferous, red gypsiferous mudstone with interbedded cross-laminated gypsum sand is the most characteristic lithology.A basal streamchannel fill at Lake Palankarinna, the Mampuwordu Member, contains the Palankarinna Fauna, and a widespread nested sequ…
A Pleistocene marsupial fauna from Limeburner's Point, Victoria, Australia
A collection of fossil marsupials, recovered from freshwater limestones at Limeburner's Point near Geelong, Victoria, Australia, is described. The fauna, here named the Limebumer's Point Local Fauna, contains two species of SarcophUus Boitard, one near S. harrisii (Boitard) and S. laniariiis (Owen), and another large speeies; a large vombatid near Disiorhinus medius (Owen): a new species of Simosthenurus Tedtord, S. mccoyi, intermediate in size be…
