A New Look at Sokolluzade Hasan Paşa’s Illustrated Universal History
This article revisits a universal history written in the late sixteenth century for the governor of Baghdad Sokolluzade Hasan Paşa (d. 1602) in light of a new- ly-discovered source that provides the missing concluding section of this universal history. This concluding section (Bibliothèque nationale de France Supplément turc 1322), which was announced in the index but not completed in the extant presen- tation copies (Topkapı Palace Museum Librar…
The Album of the World Emperor
In The Album of the World Emperor: Cross-Cultural Collecting and the Art of Album-Making in Seventeenth-Century Istanbul Fetvacı makes available a dazzling album––the album of Ahmed I (Topkapı Palace Museum Library, B. 408)––to a broad audience, and provides a first comprehensive study of this work. Harvard Sanat Müzesi’nde Bulunan Minyatürlü Bir Baki Divanı
This paper introduces an unpublished, late-sixteenth-century illustrated manuscript of the Divan of Baki (Harvard Art Museums, 1985.273). The manuscript raises the issue of options and paradigms for illustration in the Divan. Taking the Harvard Art Museums manuscript as a point of focus in comparison with the other illustrated Divan of Baki of the late-sixteenth century, this paper focuses on the relationship between a non-narrative text and imag…
İktidar Yolları
This article focuses on the art patronage of two viziers in early-seventeenthcentury Baghdad: Sokolluzade Hasan Paşa (d. 1602), a vizier prone to much grandiosity, and Hadım Yusuf Paşa (d. 1614), a court eunuch who rose to the rank of vizier but who, for the most part, seems to have fallen through the cracks of history. Through two unique works that were composed for these governors it shows the different directions the two patrons took in crafti…
An Illustrated Genealogy between the Ottomans and the Safavids
This paper focuses on an early seventeenth-century illustrated genealogy (Museum of Ethnography Ankara, No. 8457), which is stylistically attributable to Baghdad, and is iconographically and textually pro-Safavid at a point when Baghdad was under Ottoman rule. Taking the format of the illustrated genealogy, which was widespread in the Ottoman realm from the mid-sixteenth century onwards, the Ankara manuscript adapts the Ottoman genealogical tree…
