  • Ecological cost assessment theory and practice

    J Robin E Harger, G F Culhane•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1974

Plans to raise the Ross Dam on the Skagit River by the American utility, City Light, will flood a valley in Canada and have generated a conflict of resource use between conservationists and proponents of economic progress. This paper examines the variety of uses of the valley at present, and their expansion for recreational use by modest improvements. Such expanded use is compared with uses available if the valley is flooded. The comparison is ex…

  • Succession and stability in biological communities

J Robin E Harger, Ken Tustin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1973

In parallel with Rothstein a measure of community organization is defined, termed the “organization component” of an association. In the examples investigated this relationship is found to increase with succession. It is postulated that communities having high diversity and low components of organization are not biologically stable. Communities possessing high diversity as well as high levels of organization are suggested to be biologically stabi…

  • An experimental investigation into effects of Pulp mill effluent on structure of biological communities in Alberni inlet, British Columbia

J Robin E Harger, Mary Lee Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1973

Structure of biological communities forming on test panels established at stations progressively removed from a pulp mill outfall indicated simplification, as measured by a number of indices relating to species diversity, and was associated with water transparency as well as other physical factors relating to effluent discharge. A dynamic interaction between influence of dark coloured mill effluent in reducing phytoplanktonic production at the he…

  • Damage to vegetation by Chlorine gas

    J Robin E Harger•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1973

Chlorine gas released from production at a Chlor‐Alkali plant (mercury cell process) resulted in extensive damage to vegetation downwind from the factory. Within one mile downwind of the plant most species comprising the emergent vegetation in the area experienced between 30 and 90% foliage damage. Individual species demonstrated differing sensitivity as did individual organisms. Damage indicative of the presence of chlorine gas was detected up t…

  • Succession and stability in biological communities

J Robin E Harger, Ken Tustin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1973

An analysis of community structures in relation to applicability of various measures of diversity is undertaken. Structural changes in natural communities are examined with respect to succession. It is concluded that in general, diversity, however measured, can be expected to increase, at least initially with time over a successional gradient. The relationship between structural diversity, biological diversity and succession is investigated and i…
