Beyond preservation
This review explores how biotechnological preservation methods affect the nutritional quality of fruits and vegetables, compared to traditional techniques. Drying and fermentation established early preservation practices. Recent advances – such as enzymatic inhibition, CRISPR-Cas9, and bio-based coatings – aim to retain nutrients and extend shelf life. Nutritional outcomes remain underexplored. Most studies prioritise microbial safety over detail…
Non-microbial biostimulants for plant growth and abiotic stress mitigation
Climate change, population growth and declining soil fertility are threatening global food security. Modern agriculture must therefore adopt ecological and sustainable practices to restore soil fertility, strengthen crop resilience and guarantee a stable supply of food product. Plant biostimulants, a sustainable solution, have a high potential to replace certain conventional methods and improve crop productivity. These formulations of bioactive m…
Waste-to-resilience
The fate of agricultural residues is unsatisfactory worldwide. Large quantities of organic waste are often underused, merely discarded, leading to greenhouse gas emissions, soil and water pollution, and the loss of valuable resources. Anaerobic biotransformation is a promising and sustainable approach to convert organic residues into biogas and nutrient-rich biofertilizers. This literature review examines the diverse types of agricultural residue…
Enhancing salt stress tolerance in Argania spinosa (Skeels L.) using abscisic acid in temporary immersion BiocouplerTM systems
This study evaluates, for the first time, the effects of salt stress and abscisic acid (ABA) on Argania spinosa at the in vitro multiplication stage using the BiocouplerTM temporary immersion system. Unlike previous work focused on germination, this research examines the response of developing vitroplants to increasing NaCl levels (0–150 mM). Salt stress reduced shoot multiplication, photosynthetic pigments and total protein, and increased stress…
Plasticulture film coextruded with essential oils
Plasticulture has revolutionised Farming production. In salad cultivation, the snail is the main pest that can cause significant economic losses. The present study focuses on the design of a new industrial mulching material co-extruded separately with three essential oils: cade, turmeric and cumin oil. Experimental tests carried out on a pilot system confirmed the repellent effect against this mollusc and the protection of lettuce weight loss by …
Plant biotechnology for the conservation of Argania spinosa (Skeels L)
Argania spinosa, an endangered species from southwestern Morocco, is studied for preservation through plant biotechnology. The research aims to optimise argan tree propagation to boost production, preserve heritage, and use residual species. In vitro seedlings are transferred to a modified Murashige and Skoog medium with various phytohormones. Six combinations of auxins and cytokinins are tested for germination. Results show that a liquid medium …
Characterisation of a novel kefir-fermented almond milk from Moroccan Prunus dulcis varieties
This research comparatively evaluated novel kefir beverages made from almond milk derived and sourced from three Moroccan cultivars of Prunus dulcis varieties: Assoul (A), Aknoul (K), and Al Hoceima (H). Fermentation consistently instigated significant positive changes: pH significantly decreased to 4.7–5.2 by Day 21, and titratable acidity increased to 1.7–2.1%. Total soluble solids decreased from initial values (e.g. 3.783% in H) to final conte…
Natural bioconversion of green waste for tropical and subtropical climates and agriculture-based regions
This work aims to optimise the biotransformation upset by the high lignin content, of green wastes from urban parks and gardens, by creating optimal conditions for producing a natural and stable biofertilizer with adequate microbiological quality. The addition of other nutritive residues is a promising option, nutritious and complementary agro-industrial residues from the sugar and poultry industries were then selected. Seven formulations were te…
Determinant factors for optimal anaerobic digestion of agro-industrial sardine residues
In this study, nutritious and abundant waste generated by sardine canneries was used as the main substrate to assess the effect of fundamental parameters in anaerobic digestion. The temperature range studied, between 37°C and 45°C, allowed for a comparison between the performance of the thermophilic and mesophilic processes. The free water content in the substrate also enabled us to compare fermentation in solid-state fermentation (SSF) with its …
Adaptation of grape cultivars to the semi-arid climate of Saïs
This study evaluated five grape cultivars, viz. Cardinal, Prima, Victoria, Regal Seedless, and Sultanine, grown at four sites in the semi-arid Saïs region of Morocco. The research aimed to assess how the region’s climatic conditions influence grape growth and quality, to identify cultivars suitable for local golden raisin production. Pomological and physico-chemical characteristics were measured, including fruit size, seed and skin weight, juice …
Innovating for tomorrow
This monograph presents a diverse collection of articles on Morocco. These address various subjects related to food, agriculture, pollution – including its reduction – and health issues with an env
Physicochemical and nutritional profile of key mint varieties in Morocco
This article analyses various mint varieties cultivated in Morocco, focusing on their nutritional, flavour, and antioxidant properties. A questionnaire was administered to 220 participants to assess consumption trends and consumer preferences. Physicochemical studies reveal that El Brouj Mint is particularly aromatic due to its high menthol content (67.70%). Meknassi Mint is distinguished by its high vitamin C content, which contributes to immune…
Preparation of nitrogen liquid fertiliser derived from sheep wool
This work focuses on the synthesis of a liquid fertiliser deriving from sheep wool waste.. Nitrogen-rich sheep’s wool underwent alkaline hydrolysis with potassium hydroxide. The product obtained by an alkaline hydrolysis process contains nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which are the main nutrients necessary for plant growth The hydrolysis parameters, temperature, reaction time, and alkaline agent concentration were optimized using response su…
Sustainable approach for nutrient release control in organic fertilisers by using phosphogypsum
Fertilisers maintain agricultural productivity for world needs, Despite the numerous advantages of controlled release fertilisers (CRFs), production expenses and impacts on the environment and soil quality limit widespread adoption. This research focuses on valorising agro-industrial waste through a biotransformation process (anaerobic and aerobic digestion). The resulting biofertilisers, when associated with phosphogypsum (PG) using the simplex-…
Biotransformation of food waste to bio-products
This work aims to optimise the double recovery of the production of biogas and biofertilizer from abundant organic waste from agro-industrial activities such as fisheries, poultry slaughter, canteens, restaurants or kitchens by mesophilic anaerobic digestion and by formulation. The ten-point simplex-centroid mixture design strategy was used to achieve the desired initial C/N ratio for an effective biotransformation. Monitoring of this anaerobic d…
