Categorization and formation of equivalence classes in animals
Recent studies on categorization and concept learning in nonhuman animals are described, sketching studies in Japan on the background of contemporary developments of the research field. The topics included are (1) similarity‐based perceptual concepts (open‐ended categories, categorical coherence, synthetic approach, prototype effects, levels of categorization); (2) functional equivalence between category members; and (3) non‐similarity‐based asso…
Picture perception in monkeys and pigeons
Break-and-run performance on a two-manipulandum fixed-interval schedule of reinforcement
Each of four pigeons was exposed first to a standard fixed-interval schedule. With the fixed-interval duration held constant, the schedule was changed to a two-manipulandum fixed-interval schedule in which the pigeon was required to turn on the FI key in every time interval by making a response on a second key, the start key. These manipulations were carried out under four different fixed-interval durations ranging from 30 to 240 s, and resulting…
A Psychometric Hue Discrimination Function and Unitary Set of Wavelengths Which Have Equal Psychological Spacing for the Pigeon
Pigeons were trained to discriminate between two wavelengths (420-470, 470-520, 520-570, 570-650 and 470-650nm) with a yes/no procedure. The post-discrimination gradients were analysed with the signal detection methods, and a psychometric hue discrimination function ranging from 420 to 650 nm was obtained. A set of discrimination indices (d') was linearly related to wave-number differences, and lines were fitted to the data points. The slope valu…
Wavelength Discrimination Function Derived From Post-Discrimination Gradients in the Pigeon
Pigeons were trained to discriminate between two wavelengths with a yes/no procedure. Post-discrimination gradients ranging between the training wavelengths (420-470, 470-520, 520-570 and 570-650nm) were obtained for four groups. The sum of the differences between the choice probabilities at adjacent wavelengths was assumed as a measure of the rate of change in apparent color, and a wavelength discrimination function ranging from 430 to 640 nm wa…
Anomaloscope Experiment for a Study of Color Mixture in the Pigeon
Two anomaloscope experiments were conducted to test color mixture in the pigeon. In Experiment I, red-green mixtures were paired with the yellow stimulus and testing occurred in a yes/no signal-detection procedure. Results were analysed by Luce's signal detectability model and the stimulus similarity η for each pair was calculated. In Experiment II, pigeons were required to make responses in a paired comparison procedure and the scaled subjective…
