Image as Translation: The Ideological Implication of the Camera Obscura for Media Studies
This essay relies on the historical figure of the camera obscura, as the site or place of articulation between the visible and the invisible. With the help of iconographic documents, it shows that it is not merely a process of inversion that defines the camera obscura. Indeed, a crucial spatial component is at play in the medium of the room itself: the camera is the very milieu where both an inversion and a displacement take place. From this pers…
In the Distance
Philippe Theophanidis shares this essay in response to the 2020 COVID-19 / coronavirus pandemic. Almost exactly 9 years ago, the world witnessed what has since come to be known as The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster. Very few of us directly experienced the disaster, but most of us experienced some version of it through various media. Especially in the days following the incident (the weekend of March 12 and 13, 2011) the information circulated…
Sua Cuique Persona: The Ambivalent Politics of Masks
This contribution proposes to understand one specific aspect of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic from a visual perspective. The ubiquitous non-medical masks expose not only the invisibility of the biological threat but also the fact that the pandemic is at once also a political issue. This essay begins with a brief examination of an enigmatic cover portrait from the 16th century attributed to Ridolfo Ghirlandaio that bears the inscription “sua cuiqu…
Interregnum as a Legal and Political Concept: A Brief Contextual Survey
I propose to trace the dialogical path of Antonio Gramsci’s concept of ‘interregnum’ briefly mentioned in one of his prison notebooks which was rediscovered in recent years and used in various political writings. I will first examine the meaning of the concept of interregnum in the context of Roman law, where it originates. Second, I’ll show how the Italian writer used it in a two-page note included in his Quaderni del carcere to describe the pol…

Emergence and ontogenetics: Towards a communication without agent
In the scientific community, discussions about emergence are motivated by a need to understand the process by which complex systems exhibit novel characteristics that cannot be reduced to those of their parts. The whole is thus said to be greater than the sum of the parts. We borrow from this framework in order to explore a different understanding of communication. Instead of seeing the whole as the result of a communication process between the p…
