The Prior Probability of Jesus Mythicism Re-Evaluated in Light of the Gospels’ Dramatic Date
This article re-examines the prior probability of Jesus mythicism recently put forward by Richard Carrier. Carrier argues that this probability is relatively high because Jesus is among the so-called “Rank-Raglan heroes” from Mediterranean antiquity who are all fictional. If Jesus was the only historical example, he would be exceptional, which is inherently improbable. We make use of a recent survey of primary sources which has identified a large…
A Negative Testimonium
This is a response to Fernando Bermejo-Rubio’s arguments that the original Testimonium Flavianum was a negative text. Bermejo-Rubio’s textual analysis ignores a great number of caveats and counterexamples that in the end render it far from certain or probable that the Testimonium Flavianum had a negative disposition towards Jesus. To the contrary, most of the terminology does not even appear to be problematic for a Christian scribe to interpolate…
Murder Among Brothers
This article reevaluates 1 Clement 5.3–7 outside of the traditionally used backdrop of the Neronian persecution. Instead, finding the evidence for such a reading to be specious at best, especially as it pertains to the lives of Peter and Paul, an alternative interpretation is offered. Reinterpreting 1 Clement in the light of jealousy and internal tensions among early Christians, it is instead suggested that 1 Clement has in view a previous histor…
The Problem of Annals 15.44
This article contends with the multitude of suggestions that have been raised recently as to the origin of Tacitus's information on Christians and Jesus, and concludes that, contrary to much popular opinion, the theory that Tacitus's information is a reliable independent witness is likely faulty. It first discusses previous theories that have been proposed, including the hypothesis that Tacitus was reliant on Josephus, official Roman documents, e…
Re-examining the Pre-Christian Jesus
In recent years a number of scholars (such as Richard Carrier and Robert Price) have published arguments in favour of a new model of the origination of Christianity from a mythological Jesus. Part of their argumentation has been to make the case for the concept of a pre-Christian Jesus who was worshiped, or a part of Judaism before Christianity ever arose. This article seeks to provide a new analysis of this topic, since there has been almost no …
