  • Interviewing Iranian Immigrant Parents and Adolescents

    Open Access•Patricia J Higgins•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Among the newest developments in the ethnography of Iran is research on Iranians living outside of Iran. The large post-revolutionary Iranian diaspora raises many interesting issues and questions, including to what extent Iranian culture can be maintained abroad and how effectively displaced Iranians can function within host societies. Several features of the Iranian diaspora also make this population attractive for testing general theories conce…

  • Children in the Muslim Middle East

Taghreed Alqudsi-Ghabra, John Baily et al.•BOOK•Children in the Muslim Middle East•1995

Today nearly half of all people in the Middle East are under the age of fifteen. Yet little is known about the new generation of boys and girls who are growing up in a world vastly different from that of their parents, a generation who will be the leaders of tomorrow. This groundbreaking anthology is an attempt to look at the current situation of children by presenting materials by both Middle Eastern and Western scholars. Many of the works have …

  • Family History for Middle School Age Youth: A Multidisciplinary Enrichment Program

    Patricia J Higgins•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1988

As a proponent of efforts to bring anthropology to a wider audience, especially through pre-college education, I have worked with education faculty on my own campus to expose more teachers-in-training to anthropology; organized in-service workshops for pre-college teacher; compiled and edited materials for pre-college teachers and for interested anthropologists (see "For Further Reading"); and urged our professional organizations to provide more …

This issue of Practicing Anthropology culminates a five year collaborative effort to encourage the teaching of anthropology in precollege classrooms. Through workshops and symposia, publications and newsletters, resolutions and special reports, we have tried to build a network of anthropologists interested in precollege anthropology, exert pressure on the American Anthropological Association to provide support services in the national office for …

  • Special Programs in Anthropology for Precollege Teachers

    Patricia J Higgins•ARTICLE•Practicing Anthropology•1986

During the 1970s and early 1980s a small but growing number of anthropologists became involved with in-service teacher training projects. This new interest in precollege education can be traced partially to increased national concern with educational reform and partially to declining enrollments in college courses. For anthropologists involved, the recognition that exposure of precollege students to anthropology might help to increase college enr…

  • Minority-State Relations in Contemporary Iran

    Open Access•Patricia J Higgins•ARTICLE•Iranian Studies•1984•Cited by: 8•References: 13

By all accounts the departure of the shah from Iran in January 1979 was met by most Iranians with the expectation of greater freedom for both the individual and the group. For a number of minority groups, this included the expectation of greater cultural and political autonomy. Initially, the new regime appeared to be sympathetic to such expectations, but by the summer of 1979 violent conflicts were erupting between the central government and mem…
