  • Dynamic Factor Correlations

Open Access•Chen Tong, Peter Reinhard Hansen•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Econometrics•2026

We introduce a dynamic factor correlation model whose core methodological innovation is a variation‐free parametrization of dynamic factor loadings, inspired by the generalized Fisher transformation. The model accommodates time‐varying correlations, heterogeneous heavy tails, and dependent idiosyncratic shocks. Applied to a Small Universe of 12 assets and a Large Universe of 323 stocks, the factor structure induces a sparse idiosyncratic correlat…

  • Cluster GARCH

Chen Tong, Peter Reinhard Hansen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2026

We introduce a novel multivariate GARCH model with flexible convolution-t distributions that is applicable in high-dimensional systems. The model is called Cluster GARCH because it can accommodate cluster structures in the conditional correlation matrix and in tail dependencies. The expressions for the log-likelihood function and its derivatives are tractable, and the latter facilitate a score-driven model for the dynamic correlation structure. W…

  • A Canonical Representation of Block Matrices with Applications to Covariance and Correlation Matrices

Ilya Archakov, Peter Reinhard Hansen•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2024

We obtain a canonical representation for block matrices. The representation facilitates simple computation of the determinant, the matrix inverse, and other powers of a block matrix, as well as the matrix logarithm and the matrix exponential. These results are particularly useful for block covariance and block correlation matrices, where evaluation of the Gaussian log-likelihood and estimation are greatly simplified. We illustrate this with an em…

  • A Dynamic Model of Vaccine Compliance

Peter Reinhard Hansen, Matthias Schmidtblaicher•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2021

Increased vaccine hesitancy presents challenges to public health and undermines efforts to eradicate diseases such as measles, rubella, and polio. The decline is partly attributed to misconceptions that are shared on social media, such as the debunked association between vaccines and autism. Perhaps, more damaging to vaccine uptake are cases where trusted mainstream media run stories that exaggerate the risks associated with vaccines. It is impor…

  • Exponential GARCH Modeling With Realized Measures of Volatility

Peter Reinhard Hansen, Zhuo Huang•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2016

We introduce the realized exponential GARCH model that can use multiple realized volatility measures for the modeling of a return series. The model specifies the dynamic properties of both returns and realized measures, and is characterized by a flexible modeling of the dependence between returns and volatility. We apply the model to 27 stocks and an exchange traded fund that tracks the S&P 500 index and find specifications with multiple realized…

  • Realized Variance and Market Microstructure Noise

Peter Reinhard Hansen, Asger Lunde•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2006

We study market microstructure noise in high-frequency data and analyze its implications for the realized variance (RV) under a general specification for the noise. We show that kernel-based estimators can unearth important characteristics of market microstructure noise and that a simple kernel-based estimator dominates the RV for the estimation of integrated variance (IV). An empirical analysis of the Dow Jones Industrial Average stocks reveals …

  • A Test for Superior Predictive Ability

Peter Reinhard Hansen•ARTICLE•Journal of Business and Economic…•2005

We propose a new test for superior predictive ability. The new test compares favorably to the reality check (RC) for data snooping, because it is more powerful and less sensitive to poor and irrelevant alternatives. The improvements are achieved by two modifications of the RC. We use a studentized test statistic that reduces the influence of erratic forecasts and invoke a sample-dependent null distribution. The advantages of the new test are conf…
