Tradition and revelation in F.J. Molitor’s philosophy of history
The article analyzes the attempt to create a holistic doctrine of the historical process, undertaken by the German philosopher and Hebraist Franz Joseph Molitor (1779–1860). Molitor’s views, expressed in his major work, “The Philosophy of History, or On Tradition” (1827–1857), were based both on the philosophical ideas of Schelling and the concepts of Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah). An expert in Hebrew and Aramaic, Molitor devoted most of his li…
Moshe Cordovero’s Kabbalah and its reception in Europe at the end of the 17th century
Moshe ben Ya’akov Cordovero (1522–1570) was one of the most influential Kabbalists of the 16th century living in Safed in Northern Galilee (Ottoman Empire). The systematic explanation of the basic concepts of Kabbalah that he proposed had a significant impact on the subsequent development of Kabbalah. A characteristic feature of the views of Cordovero and his followers was the desire to “demythologize” Kabbalah, to create a synthesis of earlier…
Jewish Philosopher from Lithuanian Forests
Solomon Maimon (1753–1800), one of the most significant Jewish philosophers of modern times, in his writings tried to critically approach the tradition of Jewish thought and compare its teachings with the views of European philosophers. In recent decades, he and his views have attracted close attention of historians of philosophy. Recently, seven volumes of his works were published in Russia, translated from German and Hebrew. One of his most f…
Gurdjieff in Constantinople
George Gurdjieff (1866–1949) and his students’ stay in Constantinople in 1920–1921 remains a blank spot in the movement’s history. Very few records relating to this period survive. In Constantinople, Gurdjieff succeeded in founding the first branch of the Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, after his attempts in Tbilisi in 1919 had failed. In this article, two important documents related to this period are published in English transl…
“Heavenly Adam” and Jewish Kabbalah in the European religious and philosophical thought of the late 17th – early 18th centuries
Doctrine of the infinite in Jewish mysticism
