Linnaeus, Zoomusicology, Ecomusicology, and the Quest for Meaningful Categories
“Music” is not a scientific term. In the course of time, it has become like a big container, where sonic objects and practices that have nothing in common are put together. It carries so many historical and cultural connotations as to make it unfit for scholarly discourse about the social use of sound
Continuing opera with other means
The author asks himself how it is that without a specific local or even national connection to Neapolitan song, Naples’ music heritage ‘speaks’ to him, as it speaks to millions of people around the world. Neapolitan song is indeed one of the few local musical traditions that have become truly global. The notions of imagined community, cultural distance, geographic distance, and nostalgia must be summoned and played out against each other if we wa…
Ignored and forgotten
Why has research on Italian Jewish music been until recently almost nonexistent? This can only in part be explained by the small number of Jews living in Italy, compared to other European countries. Nor is racism a convincing answer. Even in the early years of Fascism, before Mussolini enacted the racial laws in 1938, the Jewish presence in Italy was not perceived, by and large, as ‘problematic’. Rather, what prevented people from gaining an awar…
Expressing, Communicating, Sharing and Representing Grief and Sorrow with Organised Sound (Musings in Eight Short Segments)
In Ancient Rome Marcus Cato (234-149 BC), commonly surnamed the Censor, or the Wise, would often speak up in the Senate and, whatever the topic under discussion, he would unfailingly start with words such as 'the City of Carthage must be destroyed' ('Carthago delenda est'). He was obsessed with the idea that Carthage, the great power competing with Rome for dominance in the Mediterranean, should be annihilated. At some point, the Phoenician city …
Zoomusicology and Ethnomusicology
What Cartesian nonsense to think of birdsong as pre-programmed cries uttered by birds to advertise their presence to the opposite sex, and so forth! Each bird-cry is a full-hearted release of the self into the air, accompanied by such joy, as we can barely comprehend.(J. M. Coetzee,Diary of a Bad Year, 2008:132)S'il s'avère que la musique est un phénomène répandu chez plusieurs espèces vivantes en-dehors de l'homme, cela remettra forcément en cau…

his article, like a previous one of mine that appeared in this journal, deals with the folk music of the Italian Trentino'. My former study describes the tradition of that area in general terms focusing on the association of musical repertories with vernacular languages, and on some peculiar aspects of the process of transmission. The present one, on the other hand, is a case study showing how the text and the music of a particular song are actua…

The Problem of Classification in Folksong Research
THE problem of folksong classification has been extensively dealt with in the ethnomusicological literature since the beginnings of the discipline in the late nineteenth century.' That no ideal solution has been found so far is shown by the constant appearance of new endeavours throughout our century. Today, even though no major breakthrough is foreseen for the immediate future, the use of the computer promises at least the possibility of more ef…
