  • Complexity and the Case for Liberal Neutrality and Skepticism: Aron, Hayek, and Gaus on the Limits of Political Knowledge

    Open Access•Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•Critical Review•2026

  • Social Choice and Public Reason: On the Possibility of Agreement and Justification in Open Societies

Cyril Hédoin•BOOK•Social Choice and Public Reason•2026

How can societies justify collective choices that interfere with individual freedom when citizens disagree about fundamental values? In Social Choice and Public Reason, economist and philosopher Cyril Hédoin addresses this challenge facing diverse liberal societies by combining social choice theory with public reason liberalism. The book introduces the Public Reason Model of Social Choice, which merges social choice theory’s formal structure with…

  • Naturalism and Moral Conventionalism

Cyril Hédoin•CHAPTER•Social Choice and Public Reason•2026

This chapter develops a naturalistic and conventionalist account of moral rules to complete the Public Reason Model. The model alone cannot specify what persons ought to do in most social choice problems, reflecting morality’s inherent indeterminacy. Moral rules serve two functions: implementing accepted principles through publicly justified social practices, and solving coordination and collective action problems by selecting among multiple just…

  • Introduction to the Symposium on Lisa Herzog’s Citizen Knowledge. Markets, Experts, and the Infrastructure of Democracy

    Open Access•Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2024

Lisa Herzog’s Citizen Knowledge. Markets, Experts, and the Infrastructure of Democracy is a significant contribution to political epistemology that addresses the causes of contemporary democracies’ epistemic deficiencies and considers how to improve the way they deal with knowledge. The field of political epistemology has been burgeoning over the last decade, in the wake of debates relative to “deliberative democracy” (e.g., Landemore, 2022), the…

  • In Search of a Stable Consensus: Rawls’s Model of Public Reason and Its Critics

    Open Access•Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethics and Social…•2023

Rawls’s political turn is the result of his struggle with the problem of stability in his theory of justice. Rawls’s late solution uses the concept of public reason. It requires that the members of the well-ordered society should abide by a political conception of justice for shared public reasons, thus fostering an overlapping consensus. This solution has been criticized by post-Rawlsian scholars endorsing a Diversity-Convergence account of the …

  • Behavioral Food Public Policies: The Relevance of Identity

    Open Access•Florence Gallois, Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2023•References: 4

Among the many sorts of policies used to fight obesity and overweight, behavioral public policies are currently expanding. However, by their very nature, behavioral public policies may threaten the respect of persons’ identity. In particular, the normative status of behavioral interventions is questionable because of the way they interfere with people’s choices. Indeed, behavioral interventions may sometimes affect individuals’ attitudes and choi…

  • The ‘Epistemic Critique’ of Epistocracy and Its Inadequacy

    Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•Social Epistemology•2021

This article assesses the relevance of the epistemic critique of epistocracy developed by economists and philosophers. I argue that the various arguments in support of this critique fail. In particular, I contend that what I call the ‘Epistemic Costs Argument’ against epistocracy is at best inconclusive if one accepts that social scientific knowledge is only moderately controversial. It follows that the case against epistocracy should be made on …

  • The Beliefs-Rules-Equilibrium Account of Institutions: A Contribution to a Naturalistic Social Ontology

    Open Access•Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Ontology•2021•References: 5

This paper pursues a naturalist endeavor in social ontology by arguing that the Beliefs-Rules-Equilibrium account of institutions can help to advance the debate over the nature of social kinds. This account of institutions emerges from a growing number of works in economics that use game theory to study the role and the functioning of institutions in human societies. I intend to show how recent developments in the economic analysis of rules and i…

  • Neo-Samuelsonian Welfare Economics: From Economic to Normative Agency

    Open Access•Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•Philosophy of the Social Sciences•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 35

Analytic narratives (ANs) are case studies of historical events and/or institutions that are formed by the combination of the narrative method characteristic of historical and historiographical works with analytic tools, especially game theory, traditionally used in economics and political science. The purpose of this article is to give a philosophy-of-science view of the relevance of analytical narratives for institutional analysis. The main cla…

  • Identity and the Value of Health

    Open Access•Florence Gallois, Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2018•References: 5

This paper argues about the importance to reflect on what constitutes the identity of an economic agent within the perspective of health valuing. Our main claim is that the valuation of health states depends on what makes up the identity of the economic agent. We argue that within the social choice model of normative analysis, the valuation of health states is necessarily done by evaluating how they bear on individuals’ well-being. We establish t…

  • From Identity to Agency in Positive and Normative Economics

Florence Gallois, Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•Forum for Social Economics•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 4

This paper argues about the importance to reflect over what constitutes the identity of the economic agent, both from the perspective of positive and normative economics. Regarding the former, we suggest that several aspects of social and personal identity are essential to explain market coordination on the basis of the existence of communities. Regarding the latter, we claim that the evaluation of social states through the aggregation of individ…

  • Toward a Naturalistic Philosophy of Institutions: About Francesco Guala, Understanding Institutions. The Science and Philosophy of Living Together

    Open Access•Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2016

Twenty years ago, John Searle published his influential account of the nature of institutions and institutional facts (Searle, 1995). Searle’s book has been a focal point for philosophers and social scientists interested in social ontology and its claims and arguments continue to be hotly disputed today. Francesco Guala, a professor at the University of Milan and a philosopher with a strong interest in economics, has written a book that in many w…

  • From Utilitarianism to Paternalism: When Behavioral Economics meets Moral Philosophy

    Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•Revue de philosophie économique•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 3

  • Models in Economics Are Not (Always) Nomological Machines: A Pragmatic Approach to Economists’ Modeling Practices

    Open Access•Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•Philosophy of the Social Sciences•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 27

This paper evaluates Nancy Cartwright’s critique of economic models. Cartwright argues that economics fails to build relevant “nomological machines” able to isolate capacities. In this paper, I contend that many economic models are not used as nomological machines. I give some evidence for this claim and build on an inferential and pragmatic approach to economic modeling. Modeling in economics responds to peculiar inferential norms where a “good”…

This article shows that in Veblen's evolutionary economics Darwinian principles are used to study socioeconomic evolutionary processes. We emphasize the dual status of institutions which, according to Veblen, are both factors and units of selection. One of the consequences is the existence in Veblen's evolutionary economics of a coevolution between institutions and habits. Then, we show that Veblen's work develops insights on the ideas of multile…

    Open Access•Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2012•References: 7

  • Weber and Veblen on the Rationalization Process

    Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Issues•2009•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Max Weber and Thorstein Veblen were two of the major contributors in the field of economics and sociology in the beginning of twentieth century. This paper argues that the works of both authors underline a "rationalization process" that occured in Western societies. We compare the respective analyses of Weber and Veblen on this subject. Despite a formal similarity, the analysis manifests some major divergences concerning the nature and the signif…

  • J. McKenzie Alexander, The Structural Evolution of Morality

    Open Access•Cyril Hédoin•ARTICLE•OEconomia•2011•References: 1

    J. McKenzie Alexander's The Structural Evolution of Morality falls within the scope of the growing evolutionary literature about morality and justice. As the title of the book clearly indicates, the author (a philosopher currently based at the London School of Economics) intends to give an evolutionary explanation of our moral behavior with the use of the most recent tools of evolutionary modeling. J.M. Alexander’s book asks several interesting q…
