  • Intimate social behavior in infant interactions in Cebus apella

    Open Access•Gayle Byrne, Stephen J Suomi•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•2009

The development and individual stability of three intimate social behaviors (Lipsmacking, Carrying Attempts, and Facial Inspection) were examined for 43 group‐housed Cebus apella infants from birth to 2 years of age. Occurrence of these behaviors was scored from 10‐min videotape samples recorded three times a week over that time. Frequency of Lipsmacking and Carrying Attempts by adult males, adult females, and juveniles were all highest in early …

  • Relationship of early infant state measures to behavior over the first year of life in the tufted capuchin monkey (Cebus apella)

    Open Access•Gayle Byrne, Stephen J Suomi•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1998

Data on activity states were collected from 29 group-housed capuchin monkey (Cebus apella) infants for 3 h each week from birth to 11 weeks of age. The amounts of time spent in sleeping/drowsy, alert–quiet, and alert–active states were measured in these subjects. Videotaped observations of these infants were recorded 3 times/week in the home cage over the first year of life and were scored for a number of social and exploratory behaviors. The ext…

  • Individual differences in object manipulation in a colony of tufted capuchins

    Open Access•Gayle Byrne, J Suomi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•1996•Cited by: 4

  • Forthcoming in American Journal of Primatology

  • Development of activity patterns, social interactions, and exploratory behavior in infant tufted capuchins ( Cebus apella )

    Open Access•Gayle Byrne, Stephen J Suomi•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1995

Early organization of activity states was studied in 17 tufted capuchin ( Cebus apella ) infants from birth to 11 weeks of age. Development of exploration and interactions with mothers and other group members were studied in 14 of these infants up to the age of 1 year. Activity profiles changed from 3 to 8 weeks as infants began to move off mothers and explore their environments. From 2 to 6 months time with mothers decreased; time alone increase…

  • Effects of woodchips and buried food on behavior patterns and psychological well‐being of captive rhesus monkeys

Open Access•Gayle Byrne, Gayle DiGregorio Byrne et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1991

The effects of adding woodchip litter to bare‐floored pens, burying monkey chow in the woodchips, and scattering sunflower seeds in woodchips was studied in 2 stable social groups of rhesus macaques ( Macaca mulatta ) to ascertain the effects of these manipulations on levels of foraging, exploration, abnormal behavior, social interactions, and urinary cortisol levels. The addition of woodchips increased exploration and feeding levels and decrease…
