Previous studies have focused on double‐modal constructions (DMs) in Englishes in the Inner Circle at the expense of the Outer Circle. Using data collected from internet forums and corpora, this study aims to narrow the research gap by examining DMs in Hong Kong English (HKE), an English variety in the Outer Circle. This study explores the structural properties, semantic properties and the substrate influence of Cantonese on DMs in HKE. Regarding…
Diachrony of punctuation in written Cantonese
This study examines the historical change of punctuation in written Cantonese (1828–2025). Before 1864, no punctuation is found. From 1864–1936, commas, pause punctuation, and full-stops share a wide range of functions. Some punctuation marks are only found in this period such as the paragraph full-stop. In 1965–1976, the functions of a comma and full-stop are narrowed. In modern Cantonese, non-language signs such as “=” are used as punctuation. …

Counterfactual Conditionals of Regret in Cantonese
This study explores the counterfactual conditional of regret ( CCR ) in Cantonese, a construction marked by 早知(道) zou 2 zi 1 (dou 3 ) ‘[lit. early know]’ and expressing regret over a remedy that could have been undertaken in the past. First, 早知(道) zou 2 zi 1 (dou 3 ) is argued to be grammaticalizing from a verb to subordinator, with the shorter form 早知 zou 2 zi 1 more commonly used as a CCR marker. Second, the properties of 早知(道) zou 2 zi 1 (dou …
Immediate anteriority construction in Cantonese
This study explores the immediate anteriority (“ IMANTE ”) construction in Cantonese, in which two events form an “as soon as” relationship. By collecting examples from corpora, three types of IMANTE construction are categorized, based on the subordinate events: (i) achievement, (ii) completion point of a durational event, and (iii) inchoative point of a durational event. This study argues that (iii) is the default usage of a subordinate event wh…
