  • Negative symptoms and self-reflection increase alienation in individuals at clinical high-risk for psychosis

Open Access•Melina Mendonça, Natalia Mansur Haddad et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Our data highlights the importance of identifying pronounced negative symptoms in CHR individuals as a reinforcer of internalized stigma. In this sense, addressing stigma in CHR should carefully consider negative symptoms, given their influence on alienation both directly and indirectly via self-reflection

  • Addressing Mood Disorder Diagnosis' Stigma With an Honest, Open, Proud (HOP)-Based Intervention

Open Access•Arlete Modelli, Viviane Piagentini Candal Setti et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2021

Introduction: The public stigma and self-stigma contribute to the dilemma of disclosing or not one's own mental illness diagnosis. Studies suggest that revealing it diminishes stress, besides helping with self-esteem. Honest, Open, Proud (HOP) is a group program that aids in the process of deciding on it, reducing its impact. Considering the relevance of this issue, the present study aimed to apply a HOP-based intervention in a group of patients …

  • Childhood maltreatment in individuals at risk of psychosis

Open Access•Elder Lanzani Freitas, Alexandre A Loch et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2020

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment is a known risk factor for the development of mental disorders, such as psychotic symptoms. BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is one of the most stigmatized psychiatric disorders, and disclosing it is often a source of stress to individuals with the disorder. The Coming Out Proud (COP) group intervention is designed to reduce the stigma's negative impact and help participants decide if they want to disclose their disorder. AIMS: To assess the effect of the COP intervention in individuals with the diagnosis of schizophrenia. METHODS: A pilot stu…

  • Patterns of stigma toward schizophrenia among the general population

    Open Access•Alexandre A Loch, Yuan-Pang Wang et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2014

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to assess stigma toward schizophrenia in a representative sample of the Brazilian general population. METHODS: The sample consisted of 1015 individuals interviewed by telephone. A vignette describing someone with schizophrenia was read, and four stigma aspects regarding this hypothetical individual were assessed: stereotypes, restrictions, perceived prejudice and social distance. Latent profile analysis searched for sti…

  • Reduced Cerebrospinal Fluid Levels of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Is Associated With Cognitive Impairment in Late-Life Major Depression

Breno S Diniz, Antônio Lúcio Teixeira et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 2

The present study adds to the growing body of evidence that abnormalities in the BDNF system are involved in the pathophysiology of LLD. The reduction of the availability of BDNF in the central nervous system may indicate increased vulnerability to the development of several age-related neuropsychiatric disorders as well as to adverse cognitive outcomes

  • Mental Disorders in Megacities

    Open Access•Laura Helena Andrade, Yuan-Pang Wang et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS ONE•2012

BACKGROUND: World population growth is projected to be concentrated in megacities, with increases in social inequality and urbanization-associated stress. São Paulo Metropolitan Area (SPMA) provides a forewarning of the burden of mental disorders in urban settings in developing world. The aim of this study is to estimate prevalence, severity, and treatment of recently active DSM-IV mental disorders. We examined socio-demographic correlates, aspec…
