Institutional Integration and Productivity Growth: Evidence from the 1995 Enlargement of the European Union
The Political U: New Evidence on Democracy and Income
Institutional integration and productivity growth: Evidence from the 1995 enlargement of the European Union
This paper studies the productivity effects of integration deepening. The identification strategy exploits the 1995 European Union (EU) enlargement, when all candidate countries joined the Single Market but one — Norway — did not join the EU. Our synthetic difference-in-differences estimates on sectoral and regional data suggest had Norway chosen deeper integration, the average Norwegian region would have experienced an increase in yearly product…
The Effect on Foreign Direct Investment of Membership in the European Union
This article explores the impact of EU membership on foreign direct investment (FDI). It analyses empirically how the effects of such deep integration differ from other forms and investigates what drives these effects. Using a structural gravity framework on annual bilateral FDI data for almost every country in the world from 1985 to 2018, we find EU membership leads to about 60 per cent higher FDI investment into the host economy from outside th…
The United Kingdom and the stability of the Euro area: From Maastricht to Brexit
The two key events expected to mark the year 2019 were the 20th anniversary of the euro and Brexit. This paper examines the role of the United Kingdom on the stability of the euro area. We study stability from the perspective of synchronisation of economic activity in a core and periphery framework. We show the UK, since 1990, has become significantly more integrated with the EU economy. The UK moved from the periphery before 1990 to the core aft…
Institutional integration and economic growth in Europe
The literature on the growth effects of European integration remains inconclusive. This is due to severe methodological difficulties mostly driven by country heterogeneity. This paper addresses these concerns using the synthetic control method. It constructs counterfactuals for countries that joined the European Union (EU) from 1973 to 2004. We find that growth effects from EU membership are large and positive, with Greece as the exception. Despi…

Corruption and Economic Growth: An Econometric Survey of the Evidence
Does corruption grease or sand the wheels of economic growth? This paper provides a systematic evaluation of the effect of corruption on growth, using metaanalysis techniques for 460 estimates from 41 studies. We find that publication bias, albeit acute, does not dissipate the genuine and negative effect of corruption on growth. Among the main factors explaining the variation in the estimated effects, we find that taking account of (a) trade open…
From Riches to Rags, and Back? Institutional Change, Financial Development and Economic Growth in Argentina since 1890
Argentina is the only country in the world that in 1900 was ‘developed’ and in 2000 was ‘developing’. Although economic historians have identified and explored various possible explanations (chiefly institutions, political instability, financial development, inflation, trade openness and international financial integration), no study so far has attempted a comprehensive quantitative assessment of their relative importance. This article tries to f…

Financial liberalization and reversals: Political and economic determinants
What accounts for the dynamics of financial reforms? This paper identifies the political regime as one of the main factors. Focusing on democratization and financial reform, it puts forward novel evidence for a U-shaped relation, across countries and over time, for different reform measures and a wide range of estimators. Partial democracy is a main obstacle to financial reforms and democratization, when incomplete, may lead to severe financial r…
Crises, What Crises? New Evidence on the Relative Roles of Political and Economic Crises in Begetting Reforms
Crises beget reforms is a powerful hypothesis. But which type of crises - economic or political - are the main drivers of structural reforms? To answer this question, we construct measures of labour market and trade liberalisation and the two types of crises for a panel of about 100 developed and developing countries between 1960 and 2000. We find that political crises are more important determinants of structural reforms than economic crises. Th…

On the Dynamics of Ethnic Fractionalization
Does fractionalization change over (short periods of) time? If so, are there any substantial implications for economic performance? To answer such questions, we construct a new panel data set with measures of ethnic, linguistic, and religious fractionalization for 26 former communist countries covering the period from 1989 to 2002. Our fractionalization measures show that transition economies became more ethnically homogeneous over such a short p…
Aggregate Investment and Political Instability: An Econometric Investigation
Although in theory the long‐run effect of uncertainty on investment is ambiguous, available econometric evidence widely supports a negative association between aggregate investment and political instability. A shortcoming of this body of evidence is that it has failed to investigate the existence and direction of causality between these two variables. This paper fills this gap by testing for such causal and negative long‐run relationship between …

Context Is Everything: Measuring Institutional Change in Transition Economies
January 2000 - What aspects of institution building most affect the transition to a market economy? In terms of effects on per capita income and school enrollment, the rule of law may be most important. In terms of life expectancy, the quality of the bureaucracy plays a more crucial role. Campos presents measures with which to map institution building during the transition from centrally planned to market economies. Data collection and indicators…

Institutions and growth: Can human capital be a link
This paper attempts to provide a sounder link between institutions and economic growth. It does so by i) identifying those institutions which might matter the most with respect to economic performance, ii) providing a rationale as to why they might matter, and iii) confronting that rationale with some systematic empirical evidence. We postulate that the central and common characteristic of relevant institutions is that they give agents a voice, a…
