  • Good Data, Good Questions: Leveraging Comprehensive, Direct-Observation Data Sets for Impactful Research on Organizations and the Environment

    Open Access•Dalia Etzion, Lucie Baudoin et al.•ARTICLE•Organization & Environment•2026

Much research on organizations and the natural environment relies on self-reported corporate data of dubious reliability and accuracy. A new wave of data, originating in satellite observations, forensic genetics, hydrological maps and other sources, can help overcome these shortcomings. We identify several data sets from the natural sciences that are easily accessible and highly accurate, and provide roadmaps for management researchers to utilize…

  • Theorizing how the Three Horizons approach supports transformative learning: Insights from advancing climate action in a Canadian Biosphere Reserve

Open Access•Sadaf Taimur, Christopher Luederitz et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2024

For society to make progress on sustainability requires businesses, alongside governments and non-government organizations, to take ambitious actions. Engaging small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is crucial in this context, as they represent one of the most common organizations in many economies and collectively contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. In response, this research investigates how the Three Horizons approach (TH…

  • Non-monetary narratives motivate businesses to engage with climate change

    Open Access•Christopher Luederitz, Animesh Animesh et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2023•References: 18

The dominant narrative to motivate business actors to take climate actions emphasizes opportunities to increase monetary gains, linking sustainability to the financial goals of these organizations. The prevalence of monetary motivations in sustainability communication among businesses, consultancies, academics and international organizations has made this narrative a truism in the private sector. We conducted an online, real-world, large- n exper…

  • Opaque transparency: How material affordances shape intermediary work

    Open Access•Miron Avidan, Dalia Etzion et al.•ARTICLE•Regulation & Governance•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 82

How do the material aspects of intermediary work affect regulators, targets, and beneficiaries? To shed light on this question, we studied an information intermediary in the form of a website and the organizations who founded it. Specifically, we analyzed FracFocus, a self‐regulatory initiative with strong industry ties, charged with disclosing data pertaining to the chemicals used in oil and gas wells completed using hydraulic fracturing technol…

  • Big Data, Management, and Sustainability: Strategic Opportunities Ahead

    Open Access•Dalia Etzion, Dror Etzion et al.•ARTICLE•Organization & Environment•2016

We contend that big data and management for sustainability are very good bedfellows, in that many of the affordances big data provides are naturally aligned with sustainability concerns (e.g., multidimensional nature, collective actions, smart allocation of resources, efficiency priority). Notwithstanding this promising stepping off point, and the enticing analytical opportunities that an abundance of data will generate, we provide some reflectio…

  • Tackling Grand Challenges Pragmatically: Robust Action Revisited

    Open Access•Fabrizio Ferraro, Dalia Etzion et al.•ARTICLE•Organization Studies•2015•Cited by: 186•References: 37

In this article, we theorize a novel approach to addressing the world's grand challenges based on the philosophical tradition of American pragmatism and the sociological concept of robust action. Grounded in prior empirical organizational research, we identify three robust strategies that organizations can employ in tackling issues such as climate change and poverty alleviation: participatory architecture, multivocal inscriptions and distributed …

  • Job insecurity and crossover of burnout in married couples

Open Access•Mina Westman, Dalia Etzion et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•2001•Cited by: 20•References: 14

We investigated crossover of burnout between spouses in 98 married couples in an organization undergoing downsizing. Burnout was found to be associated with feelings of job insecurity, self‐control and social undermining. Using SEM, findings supported the crossover of burnout from husbands to wives and the impact of burnout on undermining behavior. They also supported the research hypothesis of a direct relationship between job insecurity and bur…

  • Relief from job stressors and burnout: Reserve service as a respite.

Dalia Etzion, Dov Eden et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Applied Psychology•1998

To reveal the ameliorative impact of being away from job stressors on burnout, we compared 81 men who were called for active reserve service with 81 matched controls in the same company who were not called during the same period. Each reservist and his control completed questionnaires shortly before the reservist left work for a stint of service and immediately on his return. Analysis of variance detected a significant decline in job stress and b…

They filled out questionnaires that measured their level of burnout, job stress, work support, family support concerning work problems, and their sense of control. Findings reveal tha…

In this study, burnout and coping were investigated among 503 human service professionals in the United States and Israel. A standardized self-report measure was used to determine burnout levels. The frequencies of use of 12 different coping strategies were assessed via a self-report questionnaire, differentiating coping efforts along two dimensions (active/inactive; direct/ indirect). A two-way analysis of variance yielded significant main effec…

  • Awareness of Reversibility: Its Effect on Performance of Converse Arithmetical Operations

    Open Access•Rivka R Eifermann, Dalia Etzion•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1964

S ummary . Why is the operation of addition easier than that of subtraction, even to adults and even when the sums involved do not exceed 10? Addition and subtraction are converse operations and it is surprising, therefore, that adults, who undoubtedly comprehend their reversible nature, find one of the operations more difficult to carry out than the other. Our assumption was that this fact resulted largely from the way the two operations were ta…
