  • Exploring controls on the timing of the phytoplankton bloom in western Baffin Bay, Canadian Arctic

Open Access•Maxime Benoît-Gagné, Stephanie Dutkiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2024

In the Arctic Ocean the peak of the phytoplankton bloom occurs around the period of sea ice break-up. Climate change is likely to impact the bloom phenology and its crucial contribution to the production dynamics of Arctic marine ecosystems. Here we explore and quantify controls on the timing of the spring bloom using a one-dimensional biogeochemical/ecosystem model configured for coastal western Baffin Bay. The model reproduces the observations …

  • An overview of the Nemo modelling for the BaySys project

Open Access•Paul G Myers, David Barber et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2024

This article is intended as an introduction to discuss the development of a modelling framework to examine simulated climate change and river discharge regulation and their combined impact on marine conditions in the Hudson Bay Complex as a contribution to BaySys, a collaborative project between Manitoba Hydro, Hydro-Quebec, the University of Manitoba, the University of Alberta, Université Laval and Ouranos. In support of this work, a sea ice and…

  • Structure and function of the western Baffin Bay coastal and shelf ecosystem

Open Access•Sara Pedro, Mélanie Lemire et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2023

Arctic marine species, from benthos to fish and mammals, are essential for food security and sovereignty of Inuit people. Inuit food security is dependent on the availability, accessibility, quality, and sustainability of country food resources. However, climate change effects are threatening Inuit food systems through changes in abundance and nutritional quality of locally harvested species, while foundational knowledge of Arctic food webs remai…

  • Seasonality of zooplankton communities in the Hudson Bay system

Open Access•Sarah Schembri, Caroline Bouchard et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2023

The strong seasonality of sub-Arctic seas needs to be considered to understand their ecosystems. The Hudson Bay system undergoes strong seasonal changes in 1) sea ice conditions, alternating between complete ice cover in winter and open water in summer; 2) river discharge, which peaks in the spring and influences the stratification of the bay; and 3) surface circulation that consists of a weak double gyre system in spring and summer and a cycloni…

  • Arctic cod ( Boreogadus saida ) hatching in the Hudson Bay system

Open Access•Sarah Schembri, Inge Deschepper et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2022

Buoyant Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) eggs are found at the surface or at the ice-water interface in winter. While winter temperatures in saline waters fall below 0°C, the temperature in areas affected by under-ice river plumes is slightly higher. Under-ice river plumes may therefore provide thermal refuges favoring the survival of the vulnerable early life stages of Arctic cod. Thermal refuges would allow early hatchers to survive, benefit from …

  • Contrasting pelagic ecosystem functioning in eastern and western Baffin Bay revealed by trophic network modeling

    Open Access•Blanche Saint-Béat, Blanche Saint‐Béat et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2020

Baffin Bay, located at the Arctic Ocean’s ‘doorstep’, is a heterogeneous environment where a warm and salty eastern current flows northwards in the opposite direction of a cold and relatively fresh Arctic current flowing along the west coast of the bay. This circulation affects the physical and biogeochemical environment on both sides of the bay. The phytoplanktonic species composition is driven by its environment and, in turn, shapes carbon tran…

  • Spatial distribution of epifaunal communities in the Hudson Bay system

Open Access•Marie Pierrejean, David G Babb et al.•ARTICLE•Elementa Science of the…•2020

The seasonal sea ice cover and the massive influx of river runoff into the Hudson Bay System (HBS) of the Canadian Arctic are critical factors influencing biological production and, ultimately, the dynamics and structure of benthic communities in the region. This study provides the most recent survey of epibenthic communities in Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait and explores their relationships with environmental variables, including mean annual prima…
