  • AMS Dates of New Maize Specimens Found in Rock Shelters of the Tehuacan Valley

    Open Access•Esperanza Torres-Rodríguez, Miguel Vallebueno-Estrada et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 43

A large collection of maize macro-specimens has been gathered from archaeological sites across the American continent, but only a few have been directly dated by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). We recently conducted two new excavations in several rock shelters of Tehuacán valley (San Marcos, Coxcatlán, and Purrón) and uncovered 132 non-manipulated macro-specimens of maize suitable for morphological and paleogenomic analysis, including many c…

  • Dissecting mitochondrial dna variability of balearic populations from the bronze age to the current era

Open Access•Marc Simón, Nancy Díaz et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2016

Objectives To determine ancient population influences on ancient and current Balearic populations and to reconstruct their mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) gene pool evolution. Methods We analyzed 239 individuals belonging to five archaeological populations from Majorca and Minorca, four dating to the transition between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age, and one Late Roman Majorcan population. Six additional individuals from Santa Teresa di Gallura from t…

  • Genetic History of the Classic Period of Teotihuacan's Burials in Central Mexico

Open Access•Ana Julia Aguirre Samudio, Blanca Zoila Gonzales Sobrino et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Argentina de Antropología…•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 4

The ancient city of Teotihuacan was a great urban and ceremonial center, whose population grew exceptionally in the Classic Period (300 - 700 AC). Settlement patterns, culture and burials have indicated an occupation that consisted of groups of neighboring apartment compounds or barrios. We investigated the genetics of three apartment compounds in the Teotihuacan Valley through ancient DNA analysis to prove multiethnicity during the Classic Perio…

  • Y‐chromosome variation in South Iberia: Insights into the North African contribution

Open Access•Luis Alvarez, Cristina Santos et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2009

Population of Pedroches Valley, a hypothetical Berber settlement, located in the northwest portion of Córdoba province (Andalusia, Spain), had been analyzed for its Y-chromosome diversity. Moreover, to contextualize this population, 127 Y-chromosomes from a general Andalusia sample and a North African Berber community (Marrakech, Morocco) were also typed. For all samples, 24 single nucleotide polymorphisms of the non-recombining portion of the Y-…

  • The African contribution to the present‐day population of the Azores Islands (Portugal): Analysis of the Y chromosome haplogroup E

Open Access•Domingos Neto, Domingos Garrone‐Neto et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2007

Among the settlers that, from 1432 onwards, arrived to the Azores Islands were individuals of North and sub‐Saharan African origin. A previous study of markers of the Y chromosome revealed that haplogroup E is the second more frequent in the Azores (13%). Since this haplogroup is heterogeneous and may contain subtypes of African or non‐African origin, we analyzed an extended sample of 319 Azoreans, originating from the three groups of islands (Ea…

  • Peopling of the Azore Islands (Portugal): Data from the Y Chromosome

Olga Fernando, Paulo Gama Mota et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2005•Cited by: 4

Nine Atlantic islands with approximately five and a half centuries of demographic history constitute the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. Despite the recent peopling history of these islands, written records regarding the specific origin and relative proportions of the first settlers are scarce and incomplete. To gain insights into the history of the peopling of the Azores and to evaluate to what extent population imports described in histor…

  • Population genetics of 5 STR loci (CD4, TPO, VWA, F13A1 and MBPB) in S. Miguel Island (Azores, Portugal)

    Open Access•Catarina Silva, Paulo Castro-Oliveira et al.•ARTICLE•Antropologia Portuguesa•2004

A study of five Short Tandem Repeat (STR) loci was undertaken using samples of unrelated individuals with Azorean ancestry, born in the island of S. Miguel. Markers were analysed by PCR, followed by PAGE (CD4, TPO and VWA) or using a Genetic Analyser (F13A1 and MBPB). The results obtained revealed that two of the markers studied (VWA and MBPB) were not in agreement with the Hardy-Weinberg expectations. Population differentiation tests demonstrate…

  • Determination of Human European Mitochondrial DNA Haplogroups by Means of a Hierarchical Approach

Cristina Santos, Rafael Montiel et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2004•Cited by: 7•References: 2

In this paper we propose a hierarchical approach that allows the screening of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplogroups in populations that have essentially West Eurasian mtDNA backgrounds but that could have some non-West Eurasian contributions. To develop and validate this scheme, we used data on 18 coding region polymorphisms (17 analyzed by RFLP analysis and 1 by sequencing) and sequences of hypervariable segment I (HVSI) of the mtDNA control reg…

  • Authenticating Ancient Human Mitochondrial DNA

    Rafael Montiel, A Malgosa et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2001•Cited by: 5

The use of ancient DNA techniques in human studies has been hampered by problems of contamination with modern human DNA. The main problem has been that the object of study belongs to the same species as the observer, and the complete elimination of the contamination risk is seemingly unlikely. Contamination has even been detected in the most specialized laboratories in this field. In these kinds of studies it is therefore very important to detect…
