Teaching Spanish in the Universal Monarchy
In 1610, a Tagalog printer named Tomás Pinpin published a Spanish grammar in Tagalog that was intended to help natives avoid errors and misunderstandings in their interactions with Spanish colonizers. This article attempts to clarify the book's genesis and to contextualize it within the global expansion of Spanish. Pinpin exemplifies a pattern whereby Spanish was taught by colonial subjects on their own initiative and following their own criteria…
Indigenous Languages, Politics, and Authority in Latin America
This volume makes a vital and original contribution to a topic that lies at the intersection of the fields of history, anthropology, and linguistics. The book is the first to consider indigenous languages as vehicles of political orders in Latin America from the sixteenth century to the present, across regional and national contexts, including Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, and Paraguay. The chapters focus on languages that have been prominent in multi…

Quechua Political Literature in Early Republican Peru (1810–1876)
This chapter will examine how Quechua was recruited into Peruvian national politics from the independence wars (1810s and 1820s) to Peru’s crushing defeat in the War of the Pacific (1879–1883), which was followed by a long period of stabilization and reconstruction. It focuses on the use of Quechua in political propaganda and legislation while also examining discourses and policies concerning Quechua’s place in the incipient nation-state

Native-Language Literacy in Colonial Peru
Scholars of indigenous societies in colonial Latin America have long noted the contrast between the abundance of indigenous-language records from Mesoamerica and their extreme scarcity in the Andes. This article evaluates the degree to which written Quechua was used in everyday communication and record keeping among the indigenous population of colonial Peru by examining a corpus of Quechua documents, mostly letters and petitions from the sevente…
Pastoral Quechua
Pastoral Quechua
Pastoral Quechua_ explores the story of how the Spanish priests and missionaries of the Catholic church in post-conquest Peru systematically attempted to 'incarnate' Christianity in Quechua, a large family of languages and dialects spoken by the dense Andes populations once united under the Inca empire. By codifying (and imposing) a single written standard, based on a variety of Quechua spoken in the former Inca capital of Cuzco, and through thei…
