  • Byzantine polychromy at its finest

Open Access•Eszter Horváth, László E Aradi et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2025

The richest Avar burial ever found in the Carpathian Basin was discovered more than fifty years ago at Kunszentmiklós-Kunbábony in Hungary. The prominence of the deceased is indicated by the grave goods, anthropological observations and recent archaeogenomic results. This article presents an integrated examination of the key artefact of the assemblage, an exceptional gold belt buckle that combines the highest quality of lapidary and goldsmith wor…

  • Technical advantages bridging the preservation limits of painted decoration of Neolithic ceramic figurines

Open Access•Ludmila Kaňáková, Vojtěch Nosek et al.•ARTICLE•Virtual Archaeology Review•2025

Painting on ceramic objects is one of the most outstanding features of visual narration of the Neolithic material culture in Southeastern and partly in Central Europe. Unfortunately, post-firing painting is usually poorly preserved due to deposition conditions. Moreover, it may have been damaged or contaminated during post-excavation and conservation processes in the past. This project studies how new methods of pigment traces visual detection br…

  • A special find assemblage from the Neolithic of the Tisza region and its latest archaeological and archaeometric analysis

    Open Access•Pál Raczky, Gábor Kalla et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeologiai Értesítő•2025•References: 9

The settlement of Tiszaigar lies some 10 km south of Tiszafüred in the northern Hungarian Plain in eastern Hungary. A site known as Tiszaigar-Homokbánya extends over a roughly 250 × 150 m large area about 500 m south of the village, to the north of the entrance to the Arboretum, on the high bluff overlooking the floodplain and a former curved channel of the Tisza to the west. A large, abandoned quarry pit with a diameter of 100 m, whose depth rea…

  • Production perspectives of a high-status polychrome jewellery set from the Hunnic period (mid-5th century AD) Carpathian Basin

Open Access•Eszter Horváth, Viktória Mozgai et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2024

Fifty years after the discovery of the Regöly grave, the emblematic Hunnic period archaeological assemblage from Hungary, an extensive scientific investigation was performed on the polychrome dress accessories of the high-status woman, often referred to as the “Princess of Regöly”, buried there. The multi-instrumental analyses aimed to characterise material and technological aspects of the gemstone-inlaid artefacts (a set of a pair of bow-brooche…

  • Tiszakürt-Zsilke-tanya

Open Access•Bence Gulyás, Eszter Pásztor et al.•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2024•Cited by: 1

A cemetery section comprising 35 burials was excavated at the site of Tiszakürt-Zsilke-tanya. The burial rites suggest that the community who interred their dead here was of East European steppe origin, settled primarily east of the Tisza River. The graves were poorly furnished; the main chronological indicators are melon seed-shaped beads and two pairs of earrings with big bead pendants. Based on these, the cemetery section can be dated between …

  • Provenance and production technology of late medieval 'Besztercebánya/Banská Bystrica-type' high-quality stove tiles

    Open Access•Dorottya Györkös, Bernadett Bajnóczi et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 38

A unique collection of high-quality late medieval (fifteenth-sixteenth century) glazed and unglazed stove tiles from the northern part of the Carpathian Basin is of great interest to archaeologists and art historians. It is yet to be determined if these products, which are characterised by similar features, were produced in a single workshop, perhaps in Besztercebánya/Banská Bystrica (in present-day Slovakia), or in several workshops throughout t…
