  • Saimaluu-Tash I Rock Art (Kyrgyzstan)

    Open Access•David M Freire-Lista, Ramón Jiménez-Martínez et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026

Saimaluu-Tash I, located in a high-altitude glacial valley in Kyrgyzstan, preserves one of Central Asia’s largest and most culturally significant concentrations of rock engravings. Despite extensive archaeological research, the physical, mechanical, and chromatic properties of the sandstone substrates relevant for conservation assessment remain poorly characterized. This study integrates petrographic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, colo…

  • Absolute dating of construction materials and petrological characterisation of mortars from the Santalla de Bóveda Monument (Lugo, Spain)

    Open Access•Rebeca Blanco-Rotea, Jorge Sanjurjo-Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 38

The construction materials of the Santalla de Bóveda Monument, one of the most studied buildings in Galicia (Spain), are analysed to date the mortars and bricks of walls and vaults by combining three dating techniques: optically stimulated luminescence, radiocarbon and thermoluminescence. Petrological characterisation of the mortars themselves is carried out. Until now, the paintings on the vault have been interpreted as Roman, early Christian or…

  • Dating mortars and bricks of Santalla de Bóveda Monument (Lugo, NW Spain)

Santalla de Bóveda Monument (Lugo, NW Spain) is a small semi-buried building, under the Bóveda parish church, built in the 18th century, with an apsidal quadrangular floor plan, which was divided into three naves, a small vaulted apse and a rectangular floor plan vaulted, where paintings depicting birds and plant elements have been well preserved. The monument has aroused great interest since its discovery, but its chronology and functionality ha…

  • Mural Paintings Characterisation Using X-ray Fluorescence and Raman Spectroscopy—A Case Study

    Open Access•David M Freire-Lista, Ezequiel Vázquez et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Sixteenth-century mural paintings of Nossa Senhora das Neves in Vilar de Perdizes (Galicia—North Portugal Euroregion) were analysed. An iconographic study has allowed us to understand the meaning of the seven scenes that constitute the mural painting. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Raman spectroscopies determined the compounds used in this mural painting, both in the original and in later repaintings. The black paint was bone black. Hydroxyapatite …

  • Weathering detection of granite from three asynchronous historical quarries of Sabrosa municipally (North Portugal)

    Open Access•David M Freire-Lista, Gerardo Vidal Gonçalves et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 39

Vale das Gatas granite is the main traditional building granite of Sabrosa municipality (North of Portugal). It is a two-mica granite porphyroid of coarse-medium crystal-size, characterised by the presence of pseudo-oriented phenocrystals of feldspars. Quarries deepen as extraction techniques evolve over time. They were shallow in the Iron Age, and the granite extracted from them is more weathered and has more developed exfoliation microcracks th…

  • The Forerunners on Heritage Stones Investigation

    Open Access•David M Freire-Lista•ARTICLE•Heritage•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 52

Human activity has required, since its origins, stones as raw material for carving, construction and rock art. The study, exploration, use and maintenance of building stones is a global phenomenon that has evolved from the first shelters, manufacture of lithic tools, to the construction of houses, infrastructures and monuments. Druids, philosophers, clergymen, quarrymen, master builders, naturalists, travelers, architects, archaeologists, physici…
