  • Phantom rides in the age of virtual reality

    Open Access•Andrew P Young•ARTICLE•New Techno Humanities•2025

This article examines a curated continuum of virtual and immersive travel rides, ranging from pre-cinema rolling dioramas/panoramas, to phantom rides, Hales Tours, Star Tours, and more recently Hales Menagerie (2023). As a virtual museum exhibit, which combines phantom ride films with photogrammetry and 3D modeling, Hale’s Menagerie is used as an example of how travel films (and their virtual spinoffs) merged early filmic practices with the techn…

  • Familiar Strangers in the Shrouded Forest

    Open Access•Andrew P Young•ARTICLE•Humanities•2023

While literature and popular culture have sought to understand Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) in terms framed by the loss of social relationships and the strain caregivers face, this arrangement articulates AD as “being lost”, a fragmentation of temporal experience, or as irrationality punctuated by moments of self-awareness (which often operate to dehumanize those with AD). This analysis seeks, as Stefan Merrill Block puts it, to “stop looking for the…

  • Dark tourism and Rwandan media industries

    Open Access•Andrew P Young•ARTICLE•Tourist Studies•2022•References: 3

The purpose of this study is to delve into the range of ways that acceptable public discourse and reconciliatory language impact Rwandan memorial space and its various stakeholders. The goal is to interrogate the dissonance between the more commonly researched practices of Rwanda genocide tourism industry (the curated and controlled narratives formulated within the national memorial and its satellite sites) and that of the banal, every day, and e…

  • The Limits of Memory in Disavowed

    Open Access•Andrew P Young•ARTICLE•Games and Culture•2021

In looking at the history of U.S. military execution during World War II, this article explores the relationship between memory and psychological interference in the browser-based game Disavowed (2021). As an interesting example of the palimpsestuous negotiation between individual identity, narrativity, and cultural memory, Disavowed structures itself through the misremembering of an actual historical encounter. In such a way, it reconstructs a f…

  • Noir and Exilic Cinema

    Andrew P Young•ARTICLE•Journal of Popular Film and…•2021•References: 7

The influx of European émigré filmmakers into the US film industry during the mid-1930s led to an exilic critique in Hollywood films. This study analyzes Fritz Lang’s Fury (1936) to explore the relationships between exile and trauma, engaging with issues of displacement, memory, the victim/perpetrator duality, and the loss of “home.”

  • Peter Gunnand social fissure on US network television

    Open Access•Andrew P Young•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2017•References: 4

Producer Blake Edwards' Peter Gunn (1958-1961) appeared on US network television at a time when Beat poetry and bebop jazz were just making their mark on American culture. While Peter Gunn didn't represent a drastic shift in the reactionary values of US television, the series reconfigured radicalism and counterculture in ways that are reflective of deeper cultural contradictions. In order to explore these issues, this article seeks to explore the…
