  • Self/spouse agreement, similarity, and assumed similarity in the Hexaco personality factors

Open Access•Kibeom Lee, Michael C Ashton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2026•References: 15

We examined self/spouse agreement, similarity, and assumed (i.e., perceived) similarity in personality between spouses, using self- and spouse reports of the HEXACO personality variables from 451 Dutch heterosexual married couples ( N = 902; mean age 55 years; mean relationship duration 28 years). Self/spouse agreement correlations averaged about 0.70 for the factor-level scales and about 0.60 for the facet-level scales. Consistent with previous …

  • Personality/cognitive ability relations with and without the Project Talent Longitudinal Sample

    Open Access•Kibeom Lee, Michael C Ashton•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2025•References: 10

A recent meta-analysis on intelligence/personality relations (Stanek & Ones, 2023) produces markedly different results from previous findings for some personality traits. For example, traits such as Industriousness, Even-temper, and Compassion were nearly as strongly associated with general intelligence as were intellect-related personality traits. Here we find that many of these associations were heavily influenced by unusual results from the ma…

  • The Hexaco Personality Space Before and After Re-Rotation to Approximate the Big Five Dimensions

Michael C Ashton, Kibeom Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality Assessment•2024

We re-oriented the HEXACO personality dimensions to approximate the Big Five, using two measures of the Big Five as targets in a derivation sample and then in cross-validation samples. The HEXACO approximations of Big Five Agreeableness represented blends of HEXACO Agreeableness, Emotionality, and Honesty-Humility. The HEXACO approximations of Big Five Neuroticism represented blends of Emotionality with low Agreeableness and low Extraversion. The…

  • Self/observer agreement in personality assessment by observers’ relationship types

Open Access•Kibeom Lee, Reinout E De Vries et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Personality•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 17

We examined two forms of self/observer agreement (correlational and mean-level) in personality using a Dutch university student sample ( N =5,405) with self-reports and observer (informant) reports from parents, siblings, friends, and partners/spouses. Correlational self/observer agreement was strong across all HEXACO-PI-R scales and across relationship types ( r ̄ ≥ 0.59, but highest for partners). Regarding mean-level self/observer agreement, a…

  • On the relations between Hexaco agreeableness (versus anger) and honesty‐humility

    Open Access•Michael C Ashton, Kibeom Lee•ARTICLE•Scandinavian Journal of Psychology•2021

The HEXACO personality factors of Agreeableness‐versus‐Anger (A) and Honesty‐Humility (H) are interpreted as two complementary aspects of reciprocal altruistic tendency. Here we consider several ways of representing the positive associations between the defining traits of A and of H, through common factor analysis of self‐report HEXACO Personality Inventory—Revised (HEXACO‐PI‐R) facet scale scores ( N ≈ 111,000). We describe orthogonal solutions …

    Open Access•Kibeom Lee, Michael C Ashton•ARTICLE•Assessment•2018

Psychometric properties of the 100-item English-language HEXACO Personality Inventory–Revised (HEXACO-PI-R) were examined using samples of online respondents ( N = 100,318 self-reports) and of undergraduate students ( N = 2,868 self- and observer reports). The results were as follows: First, the hierarchical structure of the HEXACO-100 was clearly supported in two principal components analyses: each of the six factors was defined by its constitue…

  • Honest People Tend to Use Less—Not More—Profanity: Comment on Feldman et al.’s (2017) Study 1

    Open Access•Reinout E De Vries, Benjamin E Hilbig et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2018

This article shows that the conclusion of Feldman et al.’s (2017) Study 1 that profane individuals tend to be honest is most likely incorrect. We argue that Feldman et al.’s conclusion is based on a commonly held but erroneous assumption that higher scores on Impression Management Scales, such as the Lie Scale, are associated with trait dishonesty. Based on evidence from studies that have investigated (1) self-other agreement on Impression Manage…

    Open Access•Ezra M Markowitz, Lewis R Goldberg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2012

There is considerable scientific interest in the psychological correlates of pro‐environmental behaviors. Much research has focused on demographic and social‐psychological characteristics of individuals who consistently perform such actions. Here, we report the results of 2 studies in which we explored relations between broad personality traits and pro‐environmental actions. Using a wide variety of behavior and personality measures, we consistent…

  • Is Low Anxiety Part of the Psychopathy Construct

    Open Access•Beth A Visser, Michael C Ashton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2012

Low anxiety has traditionally been considered a feature of psychopathy, but there has been mixed research support for this conceptualization. We investigated the PPI‐R‐SF S tress I mmunity subscale (a measure of low anxiety) in relation to 2 widely used self‐report psychopathy scales in a sample of 346 undergraduate students. Results indicated that PPI‐R‐SF S tress I mmunity was nearly unrelated to other indicators of psychopathy, showing a near‐…

This article accepts their argument that the mere preference for social interaction is not the central element of Extraversion. However, it claims that the real core of the Extraversion factor is the tendency to behave in ways that attract social att…

We then propose a two‐part theoretical basis for these dimensions. First, Honesty and rotated variants of Agreeableness and Emotional Stability are interpreted in terms of three traits—fairness/non‐explo…
