  • People Think That Social Media Platforms Do (but Should Not) Amplify Divisive Content

Open Access•Steve Rathje, Carol E Robertson et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Psychological…•2024

Recent studies have documented the type of content that is most likely to spread widely, or go “viral,” on social media, yet little is known about people’s perceptions of what goes viral or what should go viral. This is critical to understand because there is widespread debate about how to improve or regulate social media algorithms. We recruited a sample of participants that is nationally representative of the U.S. population (according to age, …

  • Negativity drives online news consumption

    Open Access•Carol E Robertson, Nicolas Pröllochs et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2023•Cited by: 20•References: 65

Online media is important for society in informing and shaping opinions, hence raising the question of what drives online news consumption. Here we analyse the causal effect of negative and emotional words on news consumption using a large online dataset of viral news stories. Specifically, we conducted our analyses using a series of randomized controlled trials (N = 22,743). Our dataset comprises ~105,000 different variations of news stories fro…

  • Transitions in Kenyan Patriarchy: Attempts to Control Nairobi Area Traders, 1920–1963

Carol E Robertson, Claire C Robertson et al.•CHAPTER•Courtyards, Markets, City Streets•2018

This chapter attempts to control women's trading activities in Nairobi and Kiambu, the dominantly Kikuyu area immediately adjoining Nairobi to the north and northwest. Kikuyu women's trade stretches well back into the nineteenth century but was transformed by colonialism as new opportunities and imperatives encouraging trade presented themselves. The chapter concentrates on the period between 1920 and 1963, during which the scope of the women's t…

  • Trade, Gender, and Poverty in the Nairobi Area: Women’s Strategies for Survival and Independence in the 1980s

Carol E Robertson, Claire Robertson•CHAPTER•Engendering Wealth and Well-Being•2018

This chapter talks about Kikuyu and Kamba women traders in the Nairobi area and looks at the implications for women's status of market trade in the 1980s. Gender differences in access to critical resources play a key role in convincing women to trade. Among the barriers to better opportunities are access to education and property. Women's lack of education limits their ability to secure reasonably well-paid jobs. Dependency statistics illuminate …

  • Cultural Materialism: Reflections on a Theoretical Odyssey from Africa to the West Indies

    Carol E Robertson, Claire C Robertson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of women's history•1999•References: 2

This article addresses how theory has shaped the author's choice of research topic and analysis as she takes her readers on a journey to Ghana, Kenya, North America, and Saint Lucia. Coming from the position of a reformed materialist feminist moving toward cultural materialism, the author examines how theory helped her empirical work or contributed to problems; she determines whether theory has helped her to see what scholars otherwise have ignor…

Carol E Robertson, Claire C Robertson et al.•BOOK•Trouble showed the way•1997

Based on extensive archival and oral research, Robertson's book offers a fascinating and previously untold story-that of women traders in central Kenya. Fundamental to the economic and social history of East Africa, women's trade both predated colonialism and outlasted it. Exploring the interlinkage of women's agricultural production and their trade, Robertson describes how, during the colonial period, central Kenyan women dominated the dried sta…

    Carol E Robertson, Claire Robertson•ARTICLE•Feminist Studies•1987•Cited by: 8•References: 3

Since 1976, the evolution of African women's history has impacted on other social sciences. The dominant trend among scholars has been to economize social and political relationships in rethinking precolonial, colonial, and postindependence African women's history. Primarily, this has been done in a Marxist framework, with some necessary redefinition of categories. The substantive findings illustrate a common chronology for African women's histor…

It can be shown that 'rational' economic behaviour is characteristic of traders also. But not all the shibboleths associated with beliefs to the contrary have been swept away. In a well-known textbook on economic development Everett Hagen stated that, in order to make the shift from 'bazaar' to 'fixed- …

    Open Access•G Payne, G Ford et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology•1977•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Social Mobility in Britain has been a key work for theories of mobility and social stratification, but its basic data on the occupation of fathers and sons is open to question. Arguing from evidence (mainly from the Census) about occupational transition and differential fertility, this paper suggests that the 1949 study appears to have an implausible number of middle-class fathers. When this critique is related to the peculiarities of the data al…

    Carol E Robertson, Claire Robertson•ARTICLE•Frontiers A Journal of Women…•1983•Cited by: 1

Before beginning a critical look at the process of collecting life histories I need to give a definition of a life history and say a few words in promotion of their use. A life history, as I am using the term here, is a type of oral history embodying the story of a person's life constructed by a researcher from the informant's oral account. If the goal of oral history, or oral traditions, is often to establish what really happened by collecting a…
