  • Fokalisering: Bottelnek of filter

    Open Access•Wilhelm Liebenberg•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•1996

It is shown how Mieke Bal's use of the term focalization differs from that of Genette and how confusing the two has led to misrepresentation and false argument. It is proposed that the word filter be used for Bal's notion of focalization whilst Genette's focalization be defined as a “bottleneck” of information. Since it is possible for the same character in a novel to function as both bottleneck and filter, a clear terminological distinction betw…

  • Wat is ‘n Marxistiese benadering tot die letterkunde

    Open Access•Wilhelm Liebenberg•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•1990

A more inclusive view of a Marxist approach to literature than one which merely opposes it to other known theories, is proposed. A Marxist approach to literature includes, amongst others, a critique of ideology, which unmasks the ways in which bourgeois ideology maintains itself. It also offers an explanatory model for understanding literary phenomena in terms of their relations to the rest of society. A Marxist approach entails, moreover, not me…

  • Postmodernism: Progressive or conservative

    Open Access•Wilhelm Liebenberg•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•1988

Postmodernism has been defined in different ways. One can however identify three dominant themes: suspicion of metanarratives, the fictionalization of reality, and embracing mass culture. Different approaches to understanding postmodernism are outlined. There is an internal explanation, an external explanation and a view that postmodernism shows all on the surface and needs no explanation at all. These determine the positions taken in the “progre…

  • Derivean reading ‐ a critique of deconstructive criticism

    Open Access•Wilhelm Liebenberg•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•1987

For Derrida deconstruction implies the dismantling of idealism. This article shows how a certain type of deconstructive criticism, here called “Derivean Reading”, tends to regress into idealism when the focus is shifted from the re‐writing of metaphysical discourse to the re‐reading of literary texts. An explanation for this is sought by following through the implications of intertextuality. When the social and political intertext is brought into…

  • Deconstruction, literature and ideology

    Open Access•Wilhelm Liebenberg•ARTICLE•Journal of Literary Studies•1985

This paper attempts to show how deconstruction is liable to misunderstanding and non recognition (especially in South Africa and in the USA) because of the fact that it is divorced from its materialist base and because of the failure to understand it as essentially a critique of Western metaphysics, as a deconstruction of (Hegelian) idealism in all its ramifications, and not of texts as such. When texts are read/written, they are used to illustra…
