  • ‘Og D&d’

Steven Dashiell•ARTICLE•The Journal of Fandom Studies•2026

This research interrogates the subset of fandom called OSR, or Old School Renaissance, and its relation to the diversity in Dungeons & Dragons communities. Some who populate OSR are hostile to changes in the game, as it bends to a larger, diverse audience in recent years. These ideas are often expressed in social media spaces online and lead to contentious conversations between players. I perform a critical discourse analysis on X posts linked to…

  • Fandom influence and gamer agency in jury-rigged games

    Open Access•Steven Dashiell•ARTICLE•Transformative Works and Cultures•2026

Games are subject to the design of their creators, and in many ways can be seen as narratives to the imagination of the team who developed the game. However, there is another aspect to be considered, in terms of how the player interfaces with the gaming structure. I discuss how jury-rigging can take the form of hardcore play, a type of gaming where the ability to save progress and repeat encounters becomes unavailable, as the player accepts that …

Open Access•Henry Korkeila, Steven Dashiell et al.•ARTICLE•Games and Culture•2025

The data consists of a 1-month snapshot from which 50 most viewed threads were analyzed. The following aspects were recorded from each thread and first 10 replies: views, number of comments, users’ role in forums, has the developer replied to thread, topic, date, whether there are types of ca…

  • Erotic habitus and collapsed masculinity in male-dominated spaces

    Open Access•Steven Dashiell, Alexis Rowland•ARTICLE•Sexualities•2025

This paper examines how men in online discourses are constrained by sexual ideals, and use curated discourses in an effort to empower their social selves. Drawing from Adam Green’s work, we speculate that an erotic habitus surrounding sexual ideas allows men who see themselves besieged by porn and masturbation addiction to craft specific male-oriented language. In this paper, we demonstrate how men operationalize this erotic habitus through discu…

  • Disney boys to men

    Steven Dashiell•ARTICLE•Journal for Cultural Research•2023

This research examines the nature of gender presentation of men who were the stars on Disney Channel shows. Research has already examined how young women who were Disney stars become quickly sexualised and perceived as women under the male gaze. However, there is little corresponding research on boys who are subject to the scrutiny of the public. I engage in a phenomenological content analysis of the social media of three adult male actors who st…

  • Symbolic Violence in the Language of Game Descriptions of Blackness

    Open Access•Steven Dashiell•ARTICLE•Games and Culture•2023•References: 18

The present article analyzes the impact of discourses surrounding Black ethnicities in tabletop role playing games. I use discursive thematic analysis to examine the descriptions of individuals represented as Black in the Pathfinder game setting, a game system related to Dungeons & Dragons. I critically analyze descriptions in the game materials that discuss in-game Black ethnicities. I demonstrate how the discourse represents a symbolic violence…

    Open Access•Steven Dashiell, Andy Phelps•ARTICLE•Media Culture & Society•2023•References: 50

This research looks at the role of gender capital in sensitive topics in game studies. Grand Theft Auto is a game that has been linked to negative portrayals of women and glorification of violence. With the potential release of Grand Theft Auto 6, a rumor was leaked concerning the possibility of a woman as the main playable character. We examine posts on a tweet discussing the potential of the lead character in Grand Theft Auto 6 being a woman ( …

  • You feel that?’ Examining gay porn discourse as hegemonic discursive soundtrack

    Steven Dashiell•ARTICLE•Porn Studies•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 21

This paper analyzes the discursive patterns of discourse in gay pornography and theorizes how masculinities theories are involved in the interactions. In pornography, discourse can frame the notion of the sexual situation, but can also demonstrate an interaction between the actors who participate. I analyze gay pornography scenes from the company Men.com which take place between January and November of 2019. Data are collected on conversations th…

  • Discussions of Fantasy Characters and Demonstrations of a Defensive Hybridity in Gamer Masculinity

    Open Access•Steven Dashiell•ARTICLE•The Journal of Men s Studies•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 6

This paper situates gamer discussions of the fantasy race the drow, or dark elves, in masculinity theory. I examine threads from a Facebook group discussing the topic, and code the reactions of men participating. I discuss how some gamer masculinities that are displayed reinforces a belief of epistemic privilege among White men that allows for hegemonic responses to discussions that involve structural racism. I propose larp gamer masculinity as a…

This article examines the methods of discursive erasure of gender occurring in gaming spaces dominated by men. Tom Digby postulates a warrior masculinity honed among boys throughout their early experiences of gender socialization. This indoctrination valorizes manhood acts encouraged in male-dominated spaces. I use critical discourse analysis to examine 45 articles from Dragon magazine, a popular periodical associated with Dungeons & Dragons. I h…
