Manjša skupina slovenskih jezikoslovcev raziskuje t. i. naravno skladnjo. Prispevek poroča o stanju stvari leta 2017. Večino razdelka I zavzemajo osnove naravne skladnje; razen tega je prikazana sinhrona (obliko)skladnja. Razdelek II opisuje doslej narejeno v okviru diahrone (obliko)skladnje. Razdelek III ponazarja, kako naravna skladnja obravnava slogovne razločke

  • The imperative in natural syntax

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•2011

The framework of this paper is Natural Syntax initiated by the author in the tradition of (morphological) naturalness as established by Wolfgang U. Dressler and Willi Mayerthaler. Natural Syntax is a pseudo-deductive linguistic theory, and this is its most recent version. The naturalness judgements are couched in naturalness scales, which follow from the basic parameters (or "axioms") listed at the beginning of the paper. The predictions of the t…

  • Transitivity in natural syntax

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•2009

The paper implements the framework of Natural Syntax and treats various phenomena bearing on transitivity using the language material of ergative languages. In each case one ergative and one antipassive constructions are compared, and certain properties of such pairs are predicted. It is new in the paper that it is necessary to distinguish less or more transitive antipassive constructions. In the more transitive ones the agent and the patient are…

Natural Syntax is a developing deductive theory, a branch of Naturalness theory. The naturalness judgements are couched in naturalness scales, which follow from the basic parameters (or “axioms”) listed at the beginning of the paper. The predictions of the theory are calculated in what are known as deductions, whose chief components are a pair of naturalness scales and the rules governing the alignment of corresponding naturalness values. Our work owes much to, and exploits, the (hnguistic) Naturalness Theory as elaborated especially at some Austrian and German universities; cf. • The memory of Lucien Tesnière, European linguist

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1994

As is well known, there are two types of scholars, those who leave an eternal imprint upon their respective fields of research, and those who do not leave such an imprint. This is true of linguistics as well. And it seems that fate drew at least two linguists of the former kind into connection with the University of Ljubljana, namely Lucien Tesniere and the somewhat younger Roman Jakobson. Roman Jakobson was offered a post at the University of Lj…

  • Wolfgang U. Dressler. Morphonology

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1986

Leto 1985 je prineslo jezikoslovju precej znanstvene bere, dobre in slabe. Med dobro zasluži posebno pozornost knjiga Oblikoglasje dunajskega jezikoslovca Wolfganga U. Dresslerja. V knjigi je zbrano praktično vse, kar se ve o oblikoglasju ( = morfonologiji), pregledno in urejeno. Pisec knjige se postavlja na stališče, da ni v opisni slovnici poleg glasnikoslovja (=fonologije), oblikoslovja, skladnje itd. še posebnega oddelka oblikoglasje, temveč …

  • The origin of the cliticness of the west Germanic definite article

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1984

The present paper is mainly concerned with the definite ar ticle of Beowulf. The literature about the West Germanic definite article has always allotted a prime place among the old Germanic texts to this poem: it is undisputably archaic (Kuhn 1933: 105, D. Hofmann 1959:189), and suitable for statistical generalisations. Its more than 6,000 hemistichs contain about 300 instances of the. definite article (Lichtenheld 1872:332)

  • On the lack of palatalization before –end- in the plural of Icelandic nominalized present participles such as Leikandi

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1980

This paper discusses the velar pronunciation of the root final segments in the plural of the Icelandic nominalized present participles, e.g. in leikend-, the plural of leikandi "actor". Since k(k)and g(g) are pronounced palatal before e in other old words(e.g. in akkeri "anchor"), the velar pronunciation of leikend- and similar words requires an expla nation. I see in the non-application of the palatalisation rule (while that rule operated befor…

  • Inflection of modern Icelandic verbs and pronouns

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1978

The present paper is a list of modern Icelandic verbs and pronouns analysed into their respective stems and endings. Under each item it is stated which phonological rules, if any, apply in the derivations of its grammatical forms. The following items of the list should be consulted for new phonological rules: (3), (6), (31), (37), and (49); see also the Appendix. A grammatical innovation has been implemented in the list, namely the socalled repla…

  • Modern Icelandic preaspiration from the phonological point of view

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1978

The paper deals with the phonology of modern Icelandic preaspiration. The rule that produces the non-lexicalised cases of preaspiration before what is written as p, t, k + l, n is different for hardmadi and linmeli. The hard medi role generates preaspiration before an aspirated plosive + /1, n/. (The aspiration of the plosive is obliterated by a later deaspiration rule.) The linmaeli rule generates preaspiration before plosive + /l, n/ just in ca…

  • On N. Chomsky’s strict subcategorization of verbs

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1966

This paper studies the so-called strict subcategorization rules, and the theory associated with them, in the transformational grammar of. Erigl·ish as proposed by Noarn Chomsky in his Aspects. The syntactic component of English transformational grammar consists of two mutually ordered parts, viz., the base and the transformational subcomponents. The initial part of the base are the so-called categorial rules, which are of almost exclusive interes…

  • Horace G. Lunt, Attempt at a Generative Description of the Slovene

  • On the phonological boundary between constituents of modern Icelandic compound words

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1971

If the word boundary is posited between constituents of Mod ern Icelandic compound words, a number of mutually unrelated phonolog ical phenomena are accounted for without any extra machinery (say, in the structure of rules). However, I have not been able to prove that any Modern Icelandic phonological phenomena actually Require the word boundary between constituents of compound words. I could only demonstrate that certain phenomena require SOME…

  • Four modern Icelandic devoicing rules

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1972

Modern Icelandic generative phonology contains devoicing rules responsible for the partially devoiced character of the final segments of words like dag, for the voicelessness of the stem final segments in words like dag-s, rusl(-s), and for the voicelessness of the segments followed by t in words like sval-t, skamm-t (the latter in southern prounciation only). - One detail worth emphasizing: if the rules presented here are correctly formulated, t…

  • Old Icelandic consonant lengthening rule and modern Icelandic infixation of /d

    Open Access•Janez Orešnik•ARTICLE•Linguistica•1973

Old Icelandic had a Consonant Lengthening Rule in its morphological component, whose task was to lengthen postvocalic stem final l, n, s in certain inflexional forms, e.g. in the nom. sg. stóll of stól- "chair". The rule is formulated in § 1.1, and illustrated in § 1.2, where some of its exceptions are listed as well. The formulation of the rule presented in § 1.1 is defended· in some detail in § 1.3.In § 1.4 the ordering relations of the rule ar…
