Która religia jest najstarsza? Dyskusja nad początkami religii w „Diversarum hereseon liber” Filastriusza z Brescii
Ślady orygenizmu w "Diversarum hereseon liber" Filastriusza z Brescii
Elementa as a Subject of Discussion with Heresies in Philastrius of Brescia’s "Diversarum hereseon liber"
Analiza tekstu źródłowego prowadzi do następujących wniosków: 1) termin ele…
Origen and Jerome as Exegetes of the Parables from the Gospel of St. Matthew - Elements in Common and Differences
The article is an attempt to examine the degree of dependency of Jerome’s exegesis of the parables from the Gospel of St. Matthew on the exegesis of the same texts by Origen. The primary sources are Jerome’s Commentary on the Gospel of St. Matthew written in 398 AD, when he was already an enemy of the Alexandrian, and Origen’s Commentary on the same Gospel. A detailed comparative analysis of the exegesis of the selected parables led to the follow…
Praesentia carnalis Christi. Incarnation Terminology in the Anti-heretical Polemic of Philastrius of Brescia
The terminology found in one of the oldest Latin catalogs of heresies, Diversarum hereseon liber, written by Philastrius, bishop of Brescia (330-387/388), was adapted to the needs of anti-heretical polemics, and at the same time reflected the way of talking about Christ’s earthly mission, characteristic of the Latin patristic literature of the second half of the 4th century. A detailed philological and theological analysis of Philastrius’s treati…

W większości spraw podejmował on decyzje łączące postawy surowości i miłosierdzia.
Znaczenie terminu mandatum w koncepcji historii zbawienia Filastriusza z Brescii
Filastriusz, biskup Brescii (zm. ok. 387 r.), przedstawił w swoim traktacie Diversarum hereseon liber koncepcję historii zbawienia w trzech etapach: sub mandato, sub lege i sub gratia. Autor artykułu wydobywa z tekstu traktatu Filastriusza różne odcienie znaczeniowe terminu mandatum, stosując metody historyczno-porównawczą i filologiczną.
Obraz heretyków w „Moralia in Iob” Grzegorza Wielkiego
The semantic scope of the term “heresy” in Philastrius’ of Brescia Diversarum hereseon liber
The bishop of Brescia, Philastrius, author of the first Latin catalogue of heresies, written between 380 and 388, presented in his treaty an extremely large number of heterodox movements: 28 within Judaism and 128 in early Christianity. This comes as a result of a wide understanding of the term heresis. For Philastrius this term was synonymous with the term error, recognized as any deviation from the universal truth in the history of the world, …
The catalog of the heresies of Filastrius of Brescia, like other early Christian collections of informations about heterodox movements at the time, testifies the existence of groups characterized by excessively rigorous asceticism. Their description is the subject of the article. Most of these unorthodox paramonastic movements were based on the Gnostic and Manichean assumptions. The groups that accentuated the exaggerated role of prayer, among …
Nowotestamentalny paradoks mocnej słabości w egzegezie biblijnej Orygenesa
The subject of the article is the extraction and systematization of the basic aspects of Origen’s exegesis of biblical texts on the paradox of strong weakness (Mt 5, 10-11; 2Cor 12, 8-9) and embedding them in the realities of the epoch. According to Origen all human weakness – resulting both from man’s own sins and from the oppression experienced from outside – is a situation that should be used as an opportunity to take up spiritual fight and to…
Egzegeza literalna Starego Testamentu jako źródło herezji. Stanowisko Filastriusza z Brescii
In the last part of the treatise Diversarum hereseon liber (from chapter 128 to 156), Filastrius of Brescia presents heresies based on the erroneous exegesis of the various biblical texts of the Old Testament. The author of the article discusses several examples of the exegesis considered by Filastrius to be heretical, and wonders whether they indeed had signs of heresy and whether they could pose a significant threat to ecclesiastical orthodoxy…
Kobiety a ruchy heretyckie według "Diversarum hereseon liber" Filastriusza z Brescii
The article discusses two issues related to the role of women in heretical movements on the basis of Philastrius’ of Brescia Diversarum hereseon liber (written between 380 and 388): the place and the importance of the feminine in the doctrinal teaching of the heretics, along women’s participation in setting up and functioning of the various heresies. In the Jewish movements false-beliefs were associated with the figures of pagan goddesses, which …
Geneza herezji wczesnochrześcijańskich w ujęciu Filastriusza z Brescii
The original Latin catalogue of heresies, produced by Saint Philastrius of Brescia in the second half of IVth century, encompasses several observations regarding the source of early Christian heterodox movements. These views are dispersed and interwoven into the analysis of particular heresies, and as such do not constitute an integral and standalone teaching on the nature of unorthodoxy and its genesis. The present work attempts at enucleating…
Postacie kobiece Starego Testamentu w alegorycznej egzegezie Orygenesa
The article systematises the metaphors ascribed by Origen (185-253/254) to the well-known female characters of the Old Testament utilising the method of allegorical exegesis of the text of Scripture. Females appearing on the pages of the historical books of Bible are – according to the Alexandrian – allegories of human virtues or defects. They embody the spiritual warfare between the spirit and the body, between the mind and the feelings. In the…
What body will not inherit the kingdom of God? An early Christian exegesis of the First Epistle to the Corinthians 15
Ciało złe i dobre. Kwestia pochodzenia i natury ciała Adama i Chrystusa we wczesnochrześcijańskich ruchach heretyckich
The article expounds on the groundwork laid by the first Latin treaty De haeresibus by Philastrius, the fourth-century bishop of Brescia, analyzed on the background of writings of Irenaeus, Tertullian and Origen, how the rooted in Gnosticism representatives of early Christian heresies (Carpocratians, Saturninus, Valentinus, Apelles, Marcion, Manicheans) have comprehended the genesis of man’s body. After a general delivery of early Christian doubt…
The ethical ideals of ancient Greek philosophy and the virtue of humility according to the Greek Fathers of the Church in the fourth century

Can humility exist without poverty? A response by Cappadocian Fathers and John Chrysostom
Even though the ancient Greeks did not recognize humility as a virtue, in the later Christian sense, their literature (Solon, Hesiod, Herodotus, Euripides) and philosophy (Plato, Aristotle, Theophrastus, stoics, Plutarch, Plotinus) contains some elements of the idea of the humble lowliness. Pride – considered as the greatest vice – was not contrasted with humility, but with the attitude of just pride arising from a based on the principle of moder…
Pokora w walce z pychą – fundamentalny spór moralno-duchowy w rozumieniu Ojców Kapadockich i Jana Chryzostoma
The aim of the article is to show the specificity of the fundamental fight in the soul and in the life of man between pride and humility as it is seen in the writings of the Cappadocian Fathers and John Chrysostom. In the opinion of the Greek Fathers of the 4th century pride is the root of all sin. It destroys all good fruits in the Christian spiritual development, whereas humility enables and protects spiritual growth. Arguing against the heret…

Od obrazu do podobieństwa Bożego. Dynamiczna koncepcja antropologii teologicznej w II-III wieku (stanowisko Ireneusza i Orygenesa)

Papież Poncjan a sprawa Orygenesa
Teoforyczne znaczenia terminu „spiritus” w "Adversus Praxean" Tertuliana
Egzegeza patrystyczna w katechezach o psalmach Jana Pawła II i Benedykta XVI

Terminologia dotycząca pokory i pychy w pismach greckich Ojców Kościoła IV wieku
The aim of the presented paper is to analize the terminology describing humility and pride that appears in the writings of the Greek Fathers of the Church of the 4th century (Basil the Great, Gregory of Nazianzus, Gregory of Nyssa, John Chrysostom). To describe a humility they used the traditional terms that derived from ancient philosophy and were also well known in the Septuagint and in the New Testament writings; and used in the letters by Sa…
Inspiracje judeohelleńską egzegezą Filona Aleksandryjskiego w pismach św. Hieronima
Jerome, like most of the early Christian exegetes (Origen, Didymus the Blind, Hilarius of Poitiers, Ambrose, Augustine), respected Philo of Alexandria as a specialist in the field of spiritual exegesis of the Old Testament and called him vir doctissimus Iudaeorum. In his letters and biblical commentaries Jerome used the knowledge on the liturgical vestments of the high priest and their symbolism that can be found in the writings of Philo. Howeve…
