John Chrysostom 'On the Incomprehensible Nature of God' – The Simpler Way of Presenting Complex Theological and Philosophical Issues
The purpose of this paper is to indicate how, that is, with the help of which means, Chrysostom in his five homilies “On the Incomprehensible Nature of God” introduces his community in Antioch to the intricacies of the dispute with the Anomoeans, as far as the possibility of knowing God and his essence are concerned. The main differences between those texts and other fundamental polemical sources with Eunomius will also be taken under considerati…

Unknown God, Known in His Activities
What can man know about God? This question became one of the main problems during the 4th-century Trinitarian controversy, which is the focus of this book. Especially during the second phase of the conflict, the claims of Anomean Eunomius caused an emphatic response of Orthodox writers, mainly Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa. Eunomius formulated two ways of theology to show that we can know both the substance (ousia) and activities (energe…
Basil the Great’s references to Eunomius
This article presents a comparative analysis of Eunomius’ Liber Apologetius and Basil of Cesarea’s Adversus Eunomium. As a result, we can discover that Basil wrote his treatise as a typical refutation and is quite precise when referring to Eunomius. Despite some omissions that can be explained basing on the structure of The Eunomian work or historical context, we can find one important omission which is strongly connected with one of the most im…

Incomprehensibility of God and the Trinitarian controversy of the fourth century
Wykazujemy w …
Ontyczne konsekwencje grzechu Adama w ujęciu Maksyma Wyznawcy
Maximus the Confessor points out that Adam’s sin totally changed the mode of existence of human nature, which has since been proliferated via procreation involving sensual pleasure. The focus on sensual pleasure is the primary consequence of Adam’s sin. Sensual experiences are not sinful as such though they are particularly vulnerable to Satan’s temptations. It is particularly dangerous when our will is weakened and inclined to choose evil. That…
Śmierć i ostateczne przeznaczenie człowieka w ujęciu Maksyma Wyznawcy
The article presents how Maximus as Christian and philosopher understands death and eternal life. First of all, Confessor connects death with original sin and separation from God. In another meaning death is for him separation of body and soul, so that our life becomes continues preparation for death. Another important problem presented is if and how different elements of human being (intellect, soul and body) would cooperate in eternal life. Aut…
Traktat Jana Chryzostoma "O wychowaniu dzieci" i jego stosunek do traktatu "O wychowaniu dzieci" Pseudo-Plutarcha
