    Open Access•Ireneusz Milewski•ARTICLE•Studia Ceranea Journal of the…•2024

This article deals with accounts devoted to merchants and merchant activity that can be found in hagiographic texts from the early Byzantine era. Such accounts are few and far between, which is surprising, especially when compared to the patristic texts of the time. The accounts pertain both to rich merchants and to small “retail” vendors whom the merchants employed to distribute the imported goods or to sell them at market fairs. As shown by the…

  • Money in “Historia monachorum in Aegypto”

    Open Access•Ireneusz Milewski•ARTICLE•Studia Ceranea Journal of the…•2021

The text discusses the accounts of money in Historia monachorum in Aegypto. There are not many of them and, in addition, they are quite succinct. The first illustrates the face of early Byzantine fiscalism, the difficulty of paying taxes, and the resulting sanctions for the insolvent debtor and his family members. The next, equally laconic, shows the nature of the business of a merchant trading his goods from Thebaid to Alexandria. The remaining …
