Leo Monomachos, sebastos
This article concerns the edition, dating, historical interpretation and contextualisation of a remarkable metrical inscription of a seal (ca. last third of the 12th - beginning of the 13th century). The owner of this seal, Leo, who bore the no longer prestigious title of sebastos, aims to highlight his elevated social standing by emphasizing his noble descent. He stresses that he is a descendant of the ?ruler Monomachos?. This does not refer to …

Ist Andronikos Synadenos um die Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts in normannische Gefangenschaft geraten
The museum of Trebizond houses a seal with a metrical legend of special interest, documenting a Synadenos, who had for some time been in a Sicilian prison but managed to escape, and thanks the apostle Thomas for this liberation. He might be Andronikos Synadenos, the husband of Theodora Komnene, a daughter of Alexios I, who served with distinction as general and as diplomat. As a military commander he maintained order in several border regions suc…
Was the later emperor Nikephoros Botaneiates the dux of Branicevo and Nis in the 1050s
The mystery concerning a seal type erroneously interpreted in the past, could be solved with the help of a new parallel piece. The legend presents Nikephoros Botaneiates (who later became emperor) as magistros, bestes, bestarches , and doux of Nisos and Edesos for the middle of the 11th century (surely before 1061). This is the earliest mention of Nisos? upgrading from a strategis to a doukate (because of increasing difficulties with the kingdom …
Our first reconstruction of the cursus honorum of Constantine, the oldest nephew of the patriarch Michael I (Keroularios), was recently contradicted by the British scholar Michael Jeffreys with suggestions based on misunderstandings and partially less relevant sources. For this reason we feel obliged to offer a detailed reexamination of all the available and relevant sources. Constantine’s date of birth is unknown. Offices of βεστάρχης καὶ μέγας …
The article examines on the basis of the small number of essential literary and sigillographic evidence the scope and duties of the ????????? (as a terminus technicus) in the Byzantine administration. The earliest evidence comes from the 6th century, the latest from the 12th. Already in the Early Byzantine period the scope of their activities is fixed: administration of domains and municipal and fiscal administration. Acting in the capacity of st…
