The Cultural Consonance Space
Re-Cognizing Anthropological Methods
Amid calls for revisioning psychological anthropology, this chapter seeks to radically “re-cognize” the oft-overlooked subdiscipline of cognitive anthropology. To that end, it first interrogates the major theoretical and methodological frameworks within the subdiscipline both to critique colonialist tendencies and to identify opportunities to reorient these methods and theories toward more just ends. It attempts to radically reimagine a decoloniz…
Embodying intimacy in everyday interaction
Drawing on linguistic and biocultural anthropological perspectives on embodiment, this paper advances a "biolinguistic" approach to ethnographic research on intimacy, attending simultaneously to the co-constitutive interactive, psychophysiological, and phenomenological processes that emerge in everyday embodied interaction between long-term, cohabitating romantic partners. Through concurrent attention to natural interactions captured during video…
“Guys with Big Muscles Have Misplaced Priorities”
Culture beyond categories

Male body image across cultures is also poorly understood. Applying methods of cognitive anthropology to cross‐cultural male body ideals, this paper tests whether universalist or particularist approaches to body image better account for cultural variation. Results suggest that Americans …
Cultural consonance, body image, and disordered eating among young South Korean men
Modeling Culture
Cognitive culture theory and the associated methods of cultural domain analysis and cultural consensus analysis have revolutionized the study of cultural sharing and variation. However, the ways in which these methods can be employed are still not widely appreciated. Our aim in this paper is to propose a systematic framework for investigating cultural models. We provide examples of ideal types of sharing and variation in cultural models, includin…
Cultural models of male body image, fat, and acceptable personhood among Euro-Americans and South Koreans
Flower boys and muscled men
Body image disturbance and eating disorders are rising all over the world. However, little is known about experiences of body image in men across cultural groups, and measurement tools often fail to account for the profound ways in which culture and gender can affect these data. An American cultural model of the ideal male body was compared with that of South Koreans using cultural domain analysis and residual agreement analysis. Cultural domain …
