Amid calls for revisioning psychological anthropology, this chapter seeks to radically “re-cognize” the oft-overlooked subdiscipline of cognitive anthropology. To that end, it first interrogates the major theoretical and methodological frameworks within the subdiscipline both to critique colonialist tendencies and to identify opportunities to reorient these methods and theories toward more just ends. It attempts to radically reimagine a decolonizing cognitive anthropology—one that not only works to dismantle the structural inequalities of the past but also addresses emergent inequalities. The utility of this approach is demonstrated through a study comparing cultural models of identity among Hmong Americans and Hmong Chinese
