  • Reading between the lines: Democratic citizenship in the history curriculum in lower secondary education in Finland

    Open Access•Jan Löfström•ARTICLE•Citizenship Social and Economics…•2025•References: 2

The paper discusses the Finnish core curriculum (curriculum framework) for basic education, with focus on how lower secondary education in general, and history teaching specifically, is meant to develop the student's democratic citizenship. Developing the student's democratic citizenship is not an explicit aim of history teaching in the current core curriculum although the aims of history teaching there are very much about civic skills that suppo…

  • Historical and Moral Consciousness in Education: Learning Ethics for Democratic Citizenship Education

Niklas Ammert, Silvia Edling et al.•BOOK•Historical and Moral Consciousness…•2022

  • Mapping moral consciousness in research on historical consciousness and education - a summative content analysis of 512 research articles published between 1980 and 2020

Open Access•Silvia Edling, Jan Löfström et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Curriculum Studies•2022

The purpose of this article is to provide a unique overview of how third-order concepts, linked to moral consciousness, are expressed in research articles on historical consciousness related to education, as well as to document how frequently the concepts are applied between 1980 and 2020. A count of word frequency says something about how popular (strong) a concept is during a particular period, while different themes of moral consciousness enab…

  • Why is ethics important in history education? A dialogue between the various ways of understanding the relationship between ethics and historical consciousness

    Open Access•Silvia Edling, H Sharp et al.•ARTICLE•Ethics and Education•2020

In light of current tendencies, where appreciating plurality and uphold everyone’s equal value is being questioned from different directions, there is arguably a need to revive the ethical dimension of history education as a way of learning about difficult histories, including traumatic pasts. Since the 1970s historical consciousness has played an important role in articulating an approach to history with an ethical mindset. Although many theorie…

  • The good citizen: Revisiting moral motivations for introducing historical consciousness in history education drawing on the writings of Gadamer

    Open Access•Silvia Edling, H Sharp et al.•ARTICLE•Citizenship Social and Economics…•2020•References: 8

Historical consciousness is regarded as an important means to stimulate moral citizens through history education. This article conceptually examines the moral dimension associated with historical consciousness by revisiting the paradigm wars between natural science based on positivism and human and social sciences during the 1960s–1990s as expressed through the voice of Gadamer. More specifically, the article explores: (1) the moral arguments tha…

  • Historical apologies as acts of symbolic inclusion - and exclusion? Reflections on institutional apologies as politics of cultural citizenship

    Jan Löfström•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•2011•Cited by: 4•References: 18

Institutional apologies for historical injustices can be conceived as acts of symbolic inclusion directed to people whose collective experiences and memories of the past have not been recognized in the hegemonic narratives of the past. However, in this article it is argued that such apologies also have exclusionary potential as vehicles of symbolic politics of citizenship in that they may designate the apologizing community, so that it effectivel…

  • Sexual Cultures in Scandinavia

    Open Access•Jan Löfström•OTHER•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Scandinavia as a social and cultural entity comprises the Nordic countries – Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, and Finland – plus the autonomous territories of Greenland and the Faroe Islands, which belong to Denmark, and the Aland Islands, which are part of Finland. The social and cultural distinctions of the countries notwithstanding, it is often justified to consider them in aggregate. For example, in terms of prevailing values and ideals the …

  • A Premodern Legacy: The “Easy” Criminalization of Homosexual Acts Between Women in the Finnish Penal Code of 1889

    Jan Löfström•ARTICLE•Journal of Homosexuality•1998•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Homosexual acts between women were criminalized in Finland in the 1889 Penal Code which also criminalized men's homosexual acts for the first time explicitly in Finnish legislation. The inclusion of women in the Penal Code took place without much ado. In the article it is argued that the uncomplicated juxtaposing of men and women was due to the legacy of a cultural pattern where man and woman, as categories, were not in an all-pervasive polarity …

  • The Birth of the Queen/the Modern Homosexual: Historical Explanations Revisited

    Open Access•Jan Löfström•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1997•Cited by: 5•References: 16

In this paper I review a number of explanations for the emergence of the modern homosexual category in Western (mainly Northwest European) cultures. I suggest there are four different emphases in respect of the social and cultural factors given priority in interpretations of the formation of the homosexual category. Of course, individual studies have often taken into consideration more than one single factor (most notably, Greenberg, 1988; Chaunc…
