  • Now You Must Cooperate, and Smile

    Helen Johnson, Helen F Johnson•ARTICLE•Journal of Autoethnography•2025

This article uses autoethnographic poetic inquiry to explore the experiences of domestic abuse survivors, as they navigate the family court system in the UK. The author’s lived experiences are explored and illuminated through a research poem, with this piece used as a pivot around which the academic literature spins. The analysis reveals a court system that systematically fails parents and children who have experienced domestic abuse, particularl…

  • Beyond Disciplines: Spoken Word as Participatory Arts-based Research

    Open Access•Helen F Johnson•ARTICLE•International Review of…•2022

For many, the arts and sciences stand at opposite ends of an unbridgeable divide: the sciences, rigid, objective, systematic and authoritative; the arts, fluid, subjective, dynamic and capricious. Yet, there is a long history of productive dialogue and interconnection between these fields. Arts-based research represents a particularly fertile form of arts/science interaction. This paper interweaves poetry, theoretical discussion and empirical res…

  • A critical review of methods for eliciting voice from children with speech, language and communication needs

Open Access•Ashley Bloom, Sarah Critten et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Special…•2020

In this paper we discuss the need to find suitable methods for eliciting the voices of children with communication, speech and language needs in order to gain insights into their experiences of school, especially in the context of renewed legal requirements to involve children in decisions about their education. A critical review of existing methods for eliciting and facilitating communication from children with communication needs is presented, …

This article describes a new method of participatory arts-based research in which poets and social scientists form a collaborative research collective. This collaborative poetics method harnesses participants’ skills and knowledge to produce innovative, creative pieces, which can deepen understandings of social scientific issues and communicate this knowledge in engaging, accessible ways. The method was developed in a pilot study in which seven y…

  • Exploring the Lived Experience of People with Dementia Through Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

    Open Access•Helen Johnson, Helen F Johnson•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Dementia is arguably one of the biggest challenges facing society today, impacting millions of people worldwide. Nonetheless, there is only a relatively small body of research exploring what it is like to live with dementia from the perspectives of people who have this condition. This is partly because of the (implicit or explicit) belief that people with dementia lack insight into their condition and cannot talk about their experiences clearly. …

  • Living Your Values: Exploring the 'hidden' culture of a voluntary-controlled Quaker school

Helen Johnson, Helen F Johnson•ARTICLE•Journal of Beliefs and Values•2001

The Religious Society of Friends has a distinct public image, drawn from, in part, a jumble of perceptions drawn from a variety of sources (including the picture on porridge boxes). Friends themselves are sometimes reluctant to speak of a Quaker theology. It is easier to consider a sophisticated Quaker culture, which is predicated on experience and reflection, and the acting out of values rather than a complicated system of beliefs. Given this, w…
