Where are social justice principals in U. S. Movies: A review of principal roles from 1955–2023
We employed critical thematic analysis to explore how principals are portrayed in U.S. movies and how those portrayals align with current Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL, National Policy Board for Educational Administration (NPBEA)) with particular interest in the extent to which, if at all, principals are depicted as social justice leaders (PSEL Standard 3). Of the 66 movies analyzed, scenes generally fell into four categori…
Writing About Dance: Representations of Strength in the Struggle for Social Justice
The purpose of this article is to demonstrate how I grappled with questions about the meaning, purpose, and process of playful writing to represent a dance performance based on the oral history narrative of Sybil Jordan Hampton, the sole African American enrolled in her class at Little Rock Central High in Arkansas from 1959 to 1962. Through the presentation of six moments from the dance that I captured through photographs, I explore the possibil…

There's no place like homeplace: School principals' roles in developing student belonging as resistance against oppression
School principals must play a vital role in facilitating homeplace and Black joy by promoting, modeling, and holding educators responsible for their roles in contributing to homeplace. We argue that principals can enact homeplace by embodying the tenets of culturally responsive school leadership (CSRL). The purpose of this paper is to make meaning of the concept of homeplace, conceptualized by bell hooks, through storytelling and explanation of a…
Where Are the African American Males? Enrollment Criteria and the Placement of African American Males in Advanced Placement Courses
This qualitative study was a critical race analysis of Advanced Placement criteria and under-enrollment of African American males in two midwestern urban high schools. Analysis of faculty interviews and documents generated four themes. AP criteria and enrollment were implemented through formal and informal practices, and key roles of individual faculty and collaboration with faculty and families supported AP structures. However, assumptions about…
Scholars of color turn to womanism: Countering dehumanization in the academy
The article draws on critiques in political theory and morality to argue that womanism, a worldview rooted in Black women's lives and history, provides an alternative conceptual framework to prevailing Eurocentric thinking, for promoting socially just institutions of higher education. Presupposing a positioned, encultured, and embodied account of identity, womanism’s social change perspective holds transformative promise. It foregrounds Black wom…
