  • Generality and iteration

    Open Access•Taro Tokutake•ARTICLE•Historia Mathematica•2026

The present paper explores the relationship between generality and iteration in algorithms for squaring and cubing as presented in Śrīdhara’s Sanskrit arithmetic treatise, the [Book] of Three Hundred [Verses] ( Triśatī ), along with its anonymous commentary. I first examine the structure of each algorithm as stated in the base text. I then interpret and reconstruct the procedures based on the descriptions in the commentary. Finally, I explore a s…

  • Extant Manuscripts of Śrīdhara's Works

Open Access•Taro Tokutake•ARTICLE•History of Science in South Asia•2026

This paper aims to supplement David Pingree's Census of the Exact Sciences in Sanskrit by adding an entry for ”Śrīdhara,” providing detailed information on the extant manuscripts of Śrīdhara's works, based on manuscript surveys conducted in India in 2024. The investigation further seeks to elucidate aspects such as the distribution, dates, scripts, commentaries, and marginal notes associated with these manuscripts. While the primary focus is on Ś…

  • The Usage of savarṇana - in the Triśatībhāṣya

    Open Access•Taro Tokutake•ARTICLE•印度學佛教學研究•2023

The Triśatībhāṣya is an anonymous commentary on Śrīdhara’s arithmetic text, Triśatī. In Indian arithmetic the term savarṇana-, “reduction to the same color,” is usually found in the context of the calculation of fractions. The word has two meanings in the Triśatī: (1) to reduce fractions to a common denominator, and (2) to make a composite fraction calculable by reducing it to a simple fraction which possesses one numerator and one denominator. T…

  • The Place and Date of the Author of the Triśatībhāṣya

    Open Access•Taro Tokutake•ARTICLE•印度學佛教學研究•2022

The present paper attempts to determine the place and date of the author of the Triśatībhāṣya, an anonymous commentary on the Triśatī of Śrīdhara (ca. 800 CE), through an analysis of its arithmetic expressions and linguistic features. The four examples dealt with in this paper are: I) bhāgāhāra; II) bārapaṃcajaṃ 60; III) dūṇa; and IV) an example from an unknown work in Apabhraṃśa. Of these, I) and II), especially bāra, have the same usage in a te…
