Vertical vs. Horizontal Fractal Dimensions of Roads in Relation to Relief Characteristics
This paper investigated the surface length of roads from both horizontal and vertical perspectives using the theory of fractal dimension of surfaces and curves. Three progressive experiments were conducted. The first demonstrated the magnitude of the differences between the planar road length and the DTM-derived surface road length and assessed its correlation with the DTM-calculated road slope. The second investigated the road distance complexit…
Flooded with Error
Digital elevation data are essential to estimate coastal vulnerability to flooding due to sea-level rise. Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 1 arc-second global is considered the best free global digital elevation data set available. Inundation estimates from SRTM, however, are subject to uncertainty due to inaccuracies in the elevation data. Small systematic errors in low, flat areas can generate large errors in inundation models, and SRTM …
Validity and Verification
Validity and verification (V&V) are important concerns in the practice of science: they encompass approaches to determine the fidelity of data and models. This entry provides an overview of their use, with illustrative approaches, metrics, and examples, for both spatial data and spatial computational modeling. In both cases validation generally considers the degree to which data or model outputs reflect reality, while verification concerns the de…
Modeling Uncertainty in Digital Elevation Models
While digital elevation models (DEMs) are widely used to represent the earth's terrain, they are not free from error. Data errors in DEMs are likely to affect any application that uses them: a critical question is, by how much? This entry considers the nature and sources of error in digital elevation data. It describes statistical models that have been used to characterize elevation error distributions as random fields. These error models are cou…
