Validity and verification (V&V) are important concerns in the practice of science: they encompass approaches to determine the fidelity of data and models. This entry provides an overview of their use, with illustrative approaches, metrics, and examples, for both spatial data and spatial computational modeling. In both cases validation generally considers the degree to which data or model outputs reflect reality, while verification concerns the degree to which the data or computational model match the underlying conceptual model. Classic, relatively aspatial approaches to V&V are contrasted with newer methods that explicitly account for spatial position, scale, and dependence.
