  • The Sounds of Trust

    Open Access•Caroline Perrin, Laurent Weill•ARTICLE•Kyklos•2026

Prior research has found evidence for the bouba–kiki effect according to which individuals associate sounds related to “bouba” and “kiki” with shapes and feelings. Using individual data from the World Values Survey, we investigate whether political leaders with names that sound “bouba” or “kiki” are associated with higher or lower trust. We first test whether the phonetic profile of organizational names is associated with trust. We find that orga…

  • The right man for the job? Dictators’ selection mode and their facial characteristics

Open Access•Abel François, Sophie Panel et al.•ARTICLE•International Political Science…•2025•References: 54

This note analyses the relationship between the facial characteristics of non-democratic leaders and the way in which they reached office. After collecting pictures of 274 leaders in office between 1975 and 2010, we use a computer-based survey to assess how these faces are spontaneously perceived by ordinary people for five facial characteristics. We find that selected dictators (that is, those who were either elected, appointed, or foreign impos…

  • The politics of bank failures in Russia

Zuzana Fungáčová, Alexei Karas et al.•ARTICLE•Post-Soviet Affairs•2023•References: 5

Russia has witnessed a high number of bank failures over the last two decades. Using monthly data for 2002–2020, spanning four election cycles (2004, 2008, 2012, 2018), we test the hypothesis that bank failures are less likely before presidential elections. We find that, in general, bank failures are less likely to occur in the 12 months leading up to an election. However, we do not observe that bank failures during electoral cycles are more pron…

  • Politics and banking

    Laurent Weill•ARTICLE•Economic and Political Studies•2021•References: 7

This survey aims at briefly summarising key findings of the recent literature dealing with politics and banking. The interplay between banks and politics has received increasing interest in recent years following Dinc (2005) on the influence of elections on bank lending. It focusses on two questions: the influence of elections on bank behaviour, and the interconnections between democracy and banking. Two key findings emerge from the literature. F…

  • Politics and banking in Russia

    Koen Schoors, Laurent Weill•ARTICLE•Post-Soviet Affairs•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 40

We investigate whether lending by the dominant Russian state bank, Sberbank, contributed to Vladimir Putin’s ascent to power during the presidential elections of March2000. Our hypothesis is that Sberbank corporate loans were used as incentives for managers at private firms to mobilize employees to vote for Putin. In line with our proposed voter mobilization mechanism, we find that the growth of regional corporate Sberbank loans in the months bef…

  • The determinants of financial inclusion in Africa

Open Access•Alexandra Zins, Laurent Weill•ARTICLE•Review of Development Finance•2016

The objective of this paper is to examine the determinants of financial inclusion in Africa. We use the World Bank's Global Findex database on 37 African countries to perform probit estimations. We find that being a man, richer, more educated and older favor financial inclusion with a higher influence of education and income. Mobile banking is driven by the same determinants than traditional banking. We observe that the determinants of informal f…

    Pierre Pessarossi, Laurent Weill•ARTICLE•Revue économique•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 1

    Abel François, Laurent Weill•ARTICLE•Revue économique•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 5

  • Bank Liquidity Creation in Russia

Zuzana Fungáčová, Laurent Weill•ARTICLE•Eurasian Geography and Economics•2012•Cited by: 2•References: 3

Two EU-based senior economists analyze the contribution of bank liquidity creation to the Russian economy, as well as changes in creation of liquidity occurring during the global financial crisis. Applying the methodology of Berger and Bouwman's (2009) study of U.S. banking to a rich panel dataset for Russian banks for the period 1999-2009, the authors compute three alternative measures of bank liquidity creation. They find evidence of increased …

    Laurent Weill•ARTICLE•Revue économique•2006•Cited by: 2•References: 1
